harveypup
I bought 4 sachets from ASDA today of "Simply tuna" and "Simply pilchards" for cats which is just fish in jelly. 4 for a quid... bargain! They wolfed it down Just hope we don't get fishy eggs
Egluntyne
Browsing in the supermarket this am, I noticed that "Whiskers" do an organic range of cat food. I think it was £4.50ish for 12 tins, or there were pouches available at 49p each. Cheaper than buying online.
Cinnamon
I really don't like the idea of the hens eating cat food. Just doesn't feel right to me - I am sticking to saving up spare eggs & scrambling them up for them
Gallina
Beef cat food is supposed to be the best. But I don't fancy giving them anything I couldn't eat myself. My hens just get any little bits of fat and left-over cooked meat. They certainly like meat and fish more than any other food, and their third eyelid comes down ready for the attack when they see it. Egluntyne
Funny isn't it....I don't fancy giving them scrambled egg....not that I ever have any spare eggs to give them, with supplying friends etc. It is too close to cannibalism for me. I don't give them cat food which contains chicken, for the same reason. Once I have used up my present supply of organic cat food, I'll put them onto "dolphin friendly" tuna. The Dogmother
Mine had protein rich porridge this morning; pellets, oats, olive oil, citricidal, corn and tuna - they wolfed it down!
chocchick
I'm happy that Megan now has a tiny tiny little tail starting to grow back Sadly as bottom of the pecking order (and not willing to even attempt to share), she will hardly get anything unless it's well spread out like seeds, or she can run off with a bit. Silly baldy beastie.
The Dogmother
Two of mine do that Choccster - they stand on the edge of the crowd, it makes me so sad to see them like that.
Guest
Claret - I went into town this morning to the pet shop and said, 'Please could I have a small bag or rabbit food to give to my chickens.' You should have seen their faces Luckily they know me for getting all my chicken food from them. They thought it was a wind up. I of course explained that it was in Practical Poultry and the reason for feeding it to them. Unfortunately I did not get the prize for the silliest statement. That goes to a lady last week who asked if they had anything to kill - get this - 'Green fleas with yellow legs that are invisible'. Another lady last week asked for a seed tray to keep her baby ducks in. (She keeps ducks but indoors). I wonder if they told her that seed trays have holes in and the carpet would get wet when she filled it up
The Dogmother
You mean there are people about who are madder than us? My girls are now getting 'legal' doses of bunny food in their feed trough. I suspect that it doesn't taste as nice as wehn they steal it from the bunnies though
Karen & co.
This may sound dozy but what is the protein in rabbit food? that they don't get in pellets karen x
The Dogmother
I don't know what sort of protein it is Karen, presumably vegetarian. Bunnies and growing chicks have a much higher need for protein, so consequently their food has higher levels. Bunnies can get too much protein though - they need feed in the following proportions: 25% dried food, 25% vegetables/greens and 50% dried hay. Guest
My flock are just getting a handful late morning to make sure that they have eaten their chicken pellets first. Just scattered on the lawn. Seems plenty for them. Then later about an hour before they are due to roost they get their mixed corn Three meals a day - and now work to get it - not a bad life eh? I have had what I think is a brilliant idea for a winter shelter for them - but can't make it until next week as have visitors staying all weekend Will keep you posted
Egluntyne
My girls are now getting 'legal' doses of bunny food in their feed trough. What is a legal dose? When I first read it I thought it said "Lethal dose"!!!
The Dogmother
It's bunny food they're supposed to eat, rather than what they nick from the bunnies The shelter sounds intriguing Dilly - so tell us more...
Chickaboo
Interesting that about meat, I assumed they were vegetarian. I am (as we speak) soaking some split peas because they contain a lot of protein and assumed that would be a veggie friendly source for the girls, but is it too high fibre for hens? Does anyone know? Egluntyne
It's bunny food they're supposed to eat, rather than what they nick from the bunnies Aaah...gotcha. I've not got my thinking head on today.
