Janty
I used to really enjoy the fireworks but this is my first year with chickens and I find myself hating them now. I don;t suppose I would mind them if they were only let off on one night but it's now been going on for over a week. Anybody feel the same way? jos
I agree.... they are getting louder and longer and I really don't like them! Honestly, when the kids left home I thought I could have a worry free life... now I've got chickens and I'm still worrying!!
Ain't Nobody Here
I started to hate them when we got a dog and he cowered and quivered every time there was a bang.
Olly
It's the first bonfire night since I've been living in this house, I thought (as it's a rather 'nicer' area than where I lived before) that there would be fewer fireworks. Wrong - there are obviously far more families with children around here, and they have money to burn! The noise was pretty much constant for four hours or so. The cat pretends not to care, but I noticed that last night he stayed close to my side instead of going out hunting as usual. I went out to shut the chickens up after it had started, and I think they were more disturbed by me opening the eggport to check ... all tucked up and snoozing without a care in the world, and I've had some eggs this morning. I hate it though, they should be banned except for public displays. I wonder how many people ended up in A & E last night.
xScrunchee
We heard soooo many sirens last night I was out last night untill about 9.30 and my poor girls were running in and out of their run. They would go into the Eglu, hear some fireworks and all come running out. I had to post Rose through the eggport as she wouldn't stay in the Eglu. I then felt so bad for going out and not shutting them in at the normal time. I just hope that there is a ban put on fireworks. As we walked home last night I also heard some birds twittering in the trees-just goes to show how it causes distress to animals!!
Guest
The neighbors behind us - who live in a bungalow that doesn't exist on the councils planning site and are related to the neighbors on the right had a bonfire party last night. They had a huge bonfire - which mum thought was too close to our fence but DURRR they had a line of trees their side before our fence (she doesnt' see too good!). They also had some fantastic fireworks - we all sat in my bedroom and enjoyed the display and the girls didn't seen too disturbed. We have the cube right up against the house at the moment. So unless our neighbors on the left have fireworks thats our lot for this year. Any others will be distant. Even the cats wern't too bothered - one came bolting in and sat on my lap but the others were safely sleeping in front of the fires indoors. Carol U
I cringed at each of the loud bangs on the chickens' behalf, but this morning they seem to have not a care in the world. However, I have just signed the petition as I know that a lot of animals are badly affected by them. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just one night, but as someone else said, it goes on for weeks before and weeks after.
Tessa the Duchess
I cringed at each of the loud bangs on the chickens' behalf, but this morning they seem to have not a care in the world. Same here. I live right next to Alexander Palace where every year they have the most amazing public fireworks display. We usually watch it from a top bedroom window and everyone enjoys it apart from DH who, every time a particularly splendid firework explodes, mutters "there goes my April Council Tax payment" and so on and on Last night my heart stopped every time there was a big bang, I was expecting three quivering wrecks in the a.m but NO they were all completely unperturbed, which is good to know and something else not to worry about in the future. anjuli
And I thought it was just me.....I spent the evening opening the patio door and listening for distressed chickens. First night of freedom for our exbats and I was protective enough as it was!
anjuli
Thankfully they didn't seem at all perturbed....it was just me....
superjules
Mine don't seem at all worried by the fireworks. I have shut the eglu door to make sure they hear as little as possible. We saw a dogwalking acquaintance yesterday. Their dog lays completely flat on the floor behind the sofa because he is so scared of the fireworks. I thought this was a bit odd as he is a gundog!! Janty
The girls were all fine this morning but tonight someone is letting off rockets near to our house and they are very restless. Hope the supply of rockets runs out soon - surely it has to!

arowland17
Our 2 have been fine with fireworks too, we've shut their eglu door before they begin and if anything it's boosted egg laying!! After what people say on here about distressed animals I thought that at the very least they would lay fewer eggs but we've had three 2-egg days in a row, which is rare as they've dropped to 1 a day now the days are shorter so the fireworks can't be upsetting them too much and next door do very large ones very close. My mum's dog doesn't like the bangs but we keep her inside in the evenings around November, in fact we wouldn't let her outside in the dark at any time of the year and if she's around people she knows she calms down so I really don't have a problem with firework night, I love all the displays it's a shame a minority let them off in a way that ruins it for everyone else (in streets etc) and we live in an area with lots of firework shops but certainly don't get them 'for weeks either side' - maybe the weekend before and after Nov 5th weekend but certainly not weeks around here. Has to be one of my favourite times of the year with all the displays, really love it, and the chickens seem to be absolutley fine too, expected to have to bring them in each night but I've gone out and listened at the eglu when there's fireworks going off and I don't get a peep out of them (and usually they're very vocal when unhappy!!) Ziggy
In our area there are several big private schools, and they all have their own (long) display... we have had our own too in the garden, which is very short but on the spectacular side... we have five cats, the chooks, and rats, and have had rabbit and guineas in the past, and i have checked with neighbours and friends about their dogs and cats, and none of them are bothered by the fireworks. I know some pets (especially some dogs it seems) can be terrified by them, but often anti-fireworks brigades will have anyone believe all pets are totally terrified at the first sound of a distant firework, and that is not true... it seems to be a very variable thing. After a whole weekend of regular banging left right and centre, my chooks are happily foraging around, having produced perfect eggs yesterday and today. arowland17
Ziggy I totally agree, I didn't want to put it so bluntly but I think it's common sense to keep animals in the house on the weekend of Nov 5th and I love all the fireworks, I think it would be such a shame if yet another fun thing was banned from the public, I love fireworks and will probably be lynched for it now but if they're used sensibly there is no reason anyone should get hurt, it's when you start letting off large fireworks in small gardens when it clearly states the safe distance on the side of the firework and when kids get their hands on them that it all gets a bad name. We've always had fireworks in the garden (and not little selection boxes either, we get the big ones!) every year in November, and (touch wood) have never even come close to having an accident - we've had the odd firework that goes off in the opposite direction to what's expected but we stand far enough away that no one gets hurt by it. I totally agree they can be very dangerous if in the wrong hands but it's a shame a minority give them such a bad name and ruin it for the people that enjoy them - I really love fireworks, always will!! Henhathnofury
I loathe fireworks and I was out on Sunday, coming back late from Wales. In a panic, I rushed out to the girls only to finding them looking up at the fireworks and clucking, but not in distress. They then turned to one another and clucked again, as if discussing the proceedings. Cats however hate the bangs, the frequency and the lateness of each explosion. Fireworks should have a time limit both in terms of days and the hours they are set off. My girls may be immune and actually quite curious but there are plenty of terrified animals out there who suffer. Not to mention the air quality afterwards................
