Supermarket eggs

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if medium or large eggs in the supermarket come from different species of chicken, or are they from one species and just vary in size?!

Just wondering........ :!::roll:

Incidently we buy eggs (yes still no luck yet) from a farm shop as it is nice to buy ethically produced meat etc. They have fields of lovely brown chickens (don't know what type) and we always stop to look at the cute little chickens before going in, and compare notes with our own little ones. They must have about 50. Also means OH gets interested in cooking when we go there for some reason, and I get to put my feet up a few nights. Good for me and the animals. :D

We got two pheasant breasts for £2, I've never tried it so should be nice :D and the chocolate cake is definately nice :D:D, OH will regret going out and leaving me and it together :oops::roll:

In answer to your question I suspect that they use different breeds for the different sized eggs-and from experience they tend to lay the same sized eggs usually. But then again they might use older hens as as hens get older their eggs tend to get larger...I think :roll:

:? With the adopted flock ( about 50 hens and a few guys :wink: ) the !egg! 's vary in size, although the colous of the shell is usually a bit of a giveaway to some of the layers ( blue .. the Legbar, Flowerpot red, the Welsommer, White the Leghorn).

The older hens do lay larger eggs .. sometimes there are the Wind eggs .. v.small, and whites inside only. laid by the young pullets. And theres the odd double yolker .. I suspect more the bluebells for this. :wink: .

As with my 3 the breed does also dictate the size of egg ... Ginger is the largest, then Mrs Snowy and Ebony. The size of the hen is not proportionate to egg size however, as the smallest egg comes from the largest chook in my trio. :roll: .

Anyway .. have wittered on now, and forgotten what I am going on about .. time to leave this post. :roll::wink::lol:
