"Mummy Laid an Egg" by Babette Cole was fab and my children read it from 4 years old as "just a story". Even though my eldest daughter knew about periods and giving birth. I felt that she was mature enough at 9 (well 3 months short of 10 actually) to know about the bit in the middle. My mum never told me and I recall so many things I heard that were wrong. So I bought 2 books online from Amazon. One was great and the other a bit too much information for my liking. I got on well with "Let's Talk About Where Babies Come From" by Robie H Harris (ISBN 1-84428-173-6). It has cartoon style pictures and covers everything in just enough (but not too much) detail. I read each page out loud with my daughter and told her to stop me at anytime to ask any questions. She didn't ask as the book was so good. I then left her to re-read it alone. I told her I would keep it up high on a shelf and just to ask me if she ever wanted it again. I also asked her to understood that she must not tell her friends (or her younger sister who won't be ready at the same age) what she has learned. Since her friends parents may want to discuss it themselves and that her friends would need telling at different ages or have different beliefs and she seemed to understand this. Glad I did it. It was really easy with this book (few bits that made me feel uncomfortable but on the whole I'd recommend it). By the way, the 2nd book I personally felt was too much for my 9-year-old was "Let's Talk About S**" by the same author (IBBN 1-84428-174-4). I remember my mother giving me some 1950s style book about keeping yourself 'nice' and dressing prettily when you're 'inconvenienced'. I don't know how old I was, but we'd already covered it at school and knew more than the book told me Don't you just love the use of the word "inconvenienced"!! I asked her why she had them and she said she was going to play a game with them at school On a flight about 3 months ago, we had an unaccompanied minor on board. A cute little boy of about 5-6. He was fancinated by the flushing toilet at the back, so we let him get on with flushing it and coming out laughing!!!! Made my job easy! Anyway, when it was time to get off, i went up to his seat and got his bag, ready to leave. He was playing around with his trainers, so i asked if he needed me to tie the laces?? He said yes. As i bent down to tie them up, i noticed he had stuck the complimentary sanitary towels to his trainers, like 'rappers trainers', with the large 'tongue' sticking out. He had done a good job!
