Couperwife
New underwear is allowed, just not truckloads of La Senza oh, no how will I cope? cathy
Janty
This does look interesting and it would help me to economise. No new shoes for a year though....isn't that just mental cruelty? We are staying at a cottage in Betws-y-coed next year and visiting Cheshire Oaks outlet vilage during our stay. To not buy shoes from Hawkshead or Timberland would be unheard of. Last time I came back with 11 pairs.

Charlottechicken
This does look interesting and it would help me to economise. No new shoes for a year though....isn't that just mental cruelty? Work stuff IS allowed though, so if all those shoes were really for work it would be fine Of course, all of my shoes are worn for work at some point or another One thing I will have to bypass is the presents part of this. I don't know many people who will be impressed by anything other than a smart brand name, or something obviously bought, although I will be buying some Christmas fabric and making some re-usable tote bags to wrap presents in next year. I will be using Boots clubcard points to buy presents, and the vouchers from redeeming points off my credit card (used to pay bills), and the commission from the catalogue (used to buy white goods last year), and my paypal account balance! Couperwife
You must make it your mission...some of their shoes are amazing and a girl can never have enough pairs of shoes. Kev does not believe that statement he seems to think that 3 pairs is more than enough he is obviously delusional cathy x
Janty
My husband once held this inexplicable attitude to shoes. I put it down to mental instability or something. Glad to say that I have brainwashed him now and he even persuades me to buy shoes if we see a good bargain.

craftyhunnypie
I adore charity shops & Christmas / summer fayres. Love getting a bit of joy out of something somebody else no longer wants! I also love Car boot sales - the best one I ever went to was in Jersey, near to Corbieres. There were a lot of French people come over for this particular boot sale & the bargains I got were Fantastic - beautiful French tailored suits - which I wore for work - 50p each! I bought a tenor recorder for 10p - yes 10p!!!! I later sold it on ebay & got £30 for it! I also got some Jersey pottery for pence too, which I was pleased about as I'd seen it in the shops & it was expensive. I like to buy old strings of beads, pull them apart & make loads of pairs of earrings & coiled bangles from them. Hubby is as bad as me - hence a house full of clutter!!! Charlottechicken
So Emma, will you be joining me in not buying anything new for a year? It sounds like you can sniff out a bargain so you would be good at it
Chicken Licken
I do the notebook thing - it really keeps on top of my random purchases. Also it means that the money is there at the end of the month to pay for the car repairs (bit of a theme these last few months) or save or have a little treat (I consider a book or going out for coffee to be a treat! - I lead a quiet life but it suits me!) craftyhunnypie
I leasd an unusual life too. It doesn't take much to make me feel happy & treated. Coffee in a nice cafe, a picnic, as nice walk near a river etc are all lovely things I see as a treat. Treats don't have to involve shops & spending loads of money. Charlottechicken
Crikey, only 5 days to go before I attempt to buy nothing new for a year. I have stayed away from the sales so far, to get myself right out of the shopping mentality (that I was never truly in). Went through Boots and Tesco at lunchtime today, and wasn't tempted by a single thing! I think I will really have to take this a day at a time though. Is anyone with me on this or am I the Omlet forum guinea pig

Egluntyne
I've failed already. I bought a huge lock and Lock box, 2 chicken mugs and 4 assorted tops for my boys to fight over from Top Shop yesterday. The tops were an absolute bargain and my boys are very heavy on the clothes. Plus the younger one has had a massive growth spurt even though he is 18 and the stuff I bought him in October for his birthday doesn't fit anymore! Can you tell that I am trying to justify my spending! Blimey.....that is a first! I don't even do that with Him Indoors!

Egluntyne
....but it's not New Year yet - you've still got four days to spend! Ooohhhh!! How daft am I!!!!! Yippeee! Mind you.....I'm not promising not to but anything new......just to think more about whether I actually need an item before I splurge. I reckon it is a start! Snowy
Plus the younger one has had a massive growth spurt even though he is 18 and the stuff I bought him in October for his birthday doesn't fit anymore! I think buying stuff for growing children must be allowed! I resisted all the sales yesterday - but the boys needed new shoes Managed to get two pairs of childrens shoes at 30% off. Not bad going! bronze
just to think more about whether I actually need an item before I splurge. I reckon it is a start! I have a cure for that. Be so unbelievably broke that you only buy essentials anyway. I won't be joining in though as I probably will buy a few things new. I've found a shop (expensive- well for me) that does things in my size so I will save for the odd basic item from there. I never go overboard though as we just can't afford to. Olly
Compared to most of my friends I am not a big spender. Some of them just seem to shop all the time, whereas I do try and think twice before buying, but I am sometimes horrified at the amount of STUFF I possess! I often have a New Year clear-out, it's therapeutic to go through the wardrobe with black bags and just get rid of things. Of course I got given a lot more STUFF for Christmas, and I was thrilled with some of it but do I really need it? probably not. I don't think I can manage to join in totally, but I am going to follow your progress with interest, I hope you will update us on how you are managing, what you find hard to forego, and what sort of bargains you find. craftyhunnypie
I don't think I could manage it, but we are making a new rule that every week we either throw, sell or give away something out of our belongings. To seriously de clutter! So watch the freecycle on here!!!!! Emma.x
Charlottechicken
Well, I did go into Birmingham today, and started preparing for next Christmas's present bags I just couldn't resist some beautiful knitted scarves in the market at 3 for a pound, and some magic scarves too at 50p each. I ended up with six of the 3 for a pound ones and four of the magic scarves, in total ten winter scarves for £4. I didn't buy anything for myself though, I really don't enjoy the sales much I am all set for the quarter price sale in Boots (can't wait, the only sale I really like) as yesterday a colleague gave me a birthday card and inside was a £10 Boots card! I can use it and still not spend any money Mind you, it will be presents I will be buying on that too, unless I can find something stunning in the kitchen department I will keep you updated as to how much I save out of my £200 for everything monthly spending allowance (that's food and petrol in there too!). Thanks for the good luck wishes Martin, and Cathy good luck to you too! Olly, I will be sorting through the gifts I received and getting rid of equivalent items I already have, I do this with clothes too. That way you shouldn't in theory, accumulate any junk
