SarahJo
Did anyone hear this today, at lunch. Re chooks and bird flu . What a plonker the bloke was who kept saying keeping hens is complicated .. the other guy Andy was . I would have the girls culled if that was what was to be done ... even though they are pets ... but boy did it make my blood boil . Lucky the boys are at school .. only Tori heard the blue language. Mrs Blue Sky
Didn't hear that. Sounds as if it would have annoyed me too! Were they talking about a cull then? I wish they'd all calm down about this. It seems more likely that this H5N1 is travelling along trade routes, nothing to do with migrating birds. And of course you will get diseases if you live in such close proximity to animals as has been happening in areas that have had this virus, but people (esp media) have lost sight of common sense here. Leanne
I listened to it too Sarah jo, and the bloke from animal aid annoyed me too. I havent heard of animal aid but presumably its an animal charity or welfare organisation of sorts, yet all he could say was very anti chicken.he said that no one ever should keep chickens in gardens, that they are hard to look after and scratch up a garden? so what? my garden looks like the somme. but who wants a bowling green lawn anyway? i would rather have my hens than a nice lawn, just as i prefer to eat their eggs to any from a shop. he rattled on that they need grit. yes, we all knw that, and if the garden is lacking we buy extra grit to scatter around.no problem. next complaint? they are noisy. I ask you! why dont these people do their research before going on these programmes? cockerels are noisy, chickens arent!! All thge programme did was make me angry on behalf of chickens everywhere, and exasperated that men like him cause scare mongering and make situations worse. in the event of avian flu becoming a problem here, i would take every step i could to protect my girls, (as well as my family) including keeping them inside the shed or garage if it was viable. i will not ne panicked into a cull without very good reason. Louise
Animal Aid are a loosely veiled animal 'rights' organisation
SarahJo
Yeah ... Hi Leanne, glad someone else heard the plank going on .... complicated to look after, my bottom . The bit that made me laugh was when he ranted on about not eating chickens or eggs as a solution to world healyth issues ... eggs due to cholesterol. But the fact that the good guy who had the chooks was veggie, so had no other saturated animal fats in his diet, totally escaped the plank. . Had loads of eggcellent reports from chook owners though ... and I think Jeremy may be a bit of a good lifer anyway ....
bracken
Animal aid my a***! He was just a total scaremonger. Does he think we need to take courses on keeping chickens? They are no harder to look after than any other pets (in fact easier than some). It is people like him that want culling.......not our beautiful chooks. Dont you just want to throttle them yourself(folk like that)

Cate in NZ
(Minor rant to celebrate feeling grim after typhoid jab on Monday ) Nice holiday planned then Heather? Typhoid jab can be very nasty, but supposedly only nasty side effects in 8% of victims. Never had one- given hundreds, 4 today Sorry, what was this thread about, got distracted, anything to do with bird flu and culling and my eyes glaze over Media panic, must be a slow day in the news
Carolinep
i have just listened to jeremys show on the Radio 2 website (listen again) as a friend of mine had heard it lunchtime & said I should have a listen. That person from Animal aid, well, ermmm get your facts right chum. Chickens are not that difficult to look after, so what if they churn up my garden, it is mine after all!!! People shouldn't keep them as pets, he should try it for a week (bet he wouldn't be able to part with them ) Its people like him that scaremonger, as some members of the joe public will believe anything. He said that if DEFRA got involved (& I quote) "It would be a bloodbath!). Does this mean they will cull all the wildbirds too?!
Cate in NZ
He said that if DEFRA got involved (& I quote) "It would be a bloodbath!). Does this mean they will cull all the wildbirds too?! Personally I'd just cull all misinformed or scaremongering media personalities By the by, when I first looked at the this post I thought that Jeremy Vine had got married to some bizarre, possibly Thai, bride called Lunchtime . Now I'm quite disappointed that he didn't
Mrs Blue Sky
He ha I misread the title too! Not to hijack this thread, but to answer Kate's question, I am off to TOBAGO! next Thursday. And I do feel rough, but nothing fatal (not proper typhoid then) but like a cold with headswim - bound to cheer up on the beach though eh! I need to feel better tomorrow as I am off for cocktails and canapes at the House of Lords posh or what. Note to self: do not trip over own dress and swear. Also only scoff one canape at a time. I am bricking it as I am really dead common Back to topic now!
The_smeeeths
Just thought I would admit to being "kelly " from nottingham on the jeremy vine show yesterday. Didn't use my real name as it always takes 10 mins to explain it! Anyway I was also most annoyed by the animal aid guy he was talking absolute pants!! I have registered with DEFRA as they will inform me of any advise that the goverment have reference keeping my chickens safe and also we all know that if the goverment wanted to get to know where all the chicken owners are there would be a lot of "help" from the general public shopping us to them. I have nothing to hide with my babies and would be grateful of any advise that the goverment could give me on keeping them safe. The lady I spoke to at DEFRA said that they are not recommending it yet but had we thought about putting a cover over the top of the run to stop the wild bird droppings getting near the chooks. I have spoken to my oh and he is looking into doing this. If I get any advise from DEFRA I will post it for you all. Trig x
Louise
Look guys seriously Animal Aid are not a nice organisation they have links to one or two others that are very unsavoury. They are the type that don't want any animals exploited in any way that includes eating them or their products, wearing them, keeping them as pets, checking out drugs on them before giving them to children etc etc. They are fanatics and I wouldn't worry about it no matter what you say they will come back they don't give up so don't stress about what he said I haven't heard the show but have heard others like it so I can imagine If anyone wants to know more PM me I don't want to clog the thread I just want you to understand the direction he is coming from
SarahJo
Trig ... were you the one that opposed the bloke, or the lady that rang in and throughly advocated keeping chooks . Either way ... WELL DONE . Louise ... not really stressed about the plank ... but, found his comments so stupid. My goldfish is more complicated to keep than the girls . Realised now how the title reads ... sorry folks just happened to be "Weds-nesday"
The Dogmother
we thought about putting a cover over the top of the run to stop the wild bird droppings getting near the chooks. I have spoken to my oh and he is looking into doing this. If I get any advise from DEFRA I will post it for you all. Trig x Trig, rig up a winter cover using an Ikea shower curtain - a few of us have done that and they work really well at keeping out the wet and wind, but letting in fresh air and light. You can see mine here PM me if you'd like instructions, it is soo easy to make and cost me about £10 if that.
Nicola H
I have just listened to the program onlisten again and it is very interesting well done Trig (Kelly) for your contribution...........Somebody pounced on me last night at a party and asked how my chickens were and if I had listened to the program so I thought I better had, if you want to hear it click on my link and go to listen again and navigate to the Jeremy Vine wednesday show it is right at the end. Nicola H
At the top you should see buttons that say fast forward 5 mins or 15 mins it is about 1 hour and 30 mins into the program.............

Mel (& Paul)
I do find JVs show a tad annoying - I think they try and stick in too many subjects and everything becomes trivalised. (mind you I also mis read the title and it took me a while to realise )
SarahJo
.. I like him ... but then again Graham has changed jobs now and is in Switzerland 5 days a week, so any brain stimulation is a bonus . Also .. gives me the opportunity to at least shout at someone ... even if he is on the radio and can't hear
