elpolloloco!
i have noticed that some people who keep their chickens in one place say they dig lime into the soil. Why? how much do you use? where can you get it from? and does it affect the chickens in any way at all??? thanks, tap back
Egluntyne
It is Garden Lime. It "sweetens" the ground by counteracting the effect of the chicken poo on the soil. It also stops it ponging.
Jules.
Yes, it must be garden lime which can be bought from- you guessed it- garden centres or DIY shops etc. Don't get slaked lime- v dangerous.
Ain't Nobody Here
I just sprinkle a few good handfuls over the soil when I'm re-hemcoring the run then rake it about a bit. Not very scientific .

Ain't Nobody Here
Sure is . Changed my username after baring my soul on here a few too many times and worrying about being identifiable! Daft I know, but I also envied other people their cool user names ("Ain't "Ooops, word censored!"ody here but us chickens" was a bit long, so decided on the first bit only .) Guest
i fink, but don't quote me, that garden lime is calcium carbonate which is an alkali and it neutralises the acid in the droppings/soil- harmless to chooks and if they do eat any of it then it's just added calcium in their diet. Must be garden lime though NOT builders lime or any other sort.
Charlottechicken
I bought my garden lime from Wilkinsons a couple of months ago, a large box for about £1.69. It was the cheapest available if you are a penny pincher like me
UkButton
i fink, but don't quote me, that garden lime is calcium carbonate which is an alkali Yes it is an alkaline as all Bird poo is acidic... The most acidic is Vultures but I doubt anyone keeps them. A little fact but they can actually eat most biohazards including anthrax as there digestive system is so lo PH.
