BeckyBoo
Does anyone on here post or read the River Cottage Forum? I've been having a look after the HFW programme last night having not looked at it for months, (too busy on here ) there's a topic on there Supermarket Organic Food, and it's just about virtual fisticuffs! Not a very friendly discussion at all There's people accusing other people of being ignorant, sarcastic, goodness only knows what Is it normally like that? I don't really do any other forums other than this so just assumed all forums were friendly and supportive, maybe I was wrong, not what I expected of anything River Cottage at all! bronze
I am a member but dont post. Theres good reading as a lot of the members do know their stuff but I don't think its as friendly as omlet or even inebg . (was that tactful enough?) chelsea
I dont know ANY forum as friendly, well run, and pleasurable as this one. I have visited other forums and this one knocks spots off the rest! to be honest I dont visit anywhere much anymore apart from here
Egluntyne
I'm sure we share a moderator with River Cottage. I wonder why there is such a difference in style.
feemcg
I don't post on it but must go and have a look if it's that bad! I've looked in, and contributed, to several forums and find (this being the exception) that there's always some all-knowing, big-headed, supercilious idiot who likes to spill their abundant 'knowledge' to anyone that'll read it, then disagree and argue with anyone else's opinion. I also often find, and it does happen on this forum occasionally, that you get new members who wade in and don't quite know forum 'etiquette' - they can be quite direct and abrasive, and don't really know how to come across 'nicely' while trying to make a point....but they soon learn

I can't be bothered much with other forums (I know.....its "fora") now. There is an aggressive person on another hen forum who fits the description that Fee has given exactly. Always knows best......and talks absolute rubbish too. Has a forum name that sounds like an American pain killer. It really saddens me that people feel they have to behave like that. Makes them feel big I suppose.
Mrs Frugal
I'm sure we share a moderator with River Cottage. I wonder why there is such a difference in style. You do - me . I moderate a few of the sections on the RC forum although I'm not very efficient at it - I should be moderating that particular section too . It's not as friendly a forum as this one and I don't know why as it used to be. I think that some of the members there have very extreme views and aren't as tolerant as we are here. The moderating team allow a healthy debate but if things get overheated, they will step in. They don't allow name calling or personal insults to remain. Tessa the Duchess
The only other forum that I take a peek into now and then is 'Its not easy being green' which seems quite a friendly sort of place, but if I do have any 'green' questions I'd rather post them here However I do belong to a few Yahoo mailing lists which are just like forums only the e.mails arrive in your inbox, you don't have to go online to read them. The mailing lists I am on are not for chickens but other interests that I have, and they are not moderated and of course some idiot joins the list and decides to make trouble and flame people, and it all kicks off until the person is made to feel REALLY unwelcome and leaves and we can get down to discussing the things we are interested in....all very annoying Tessa
Lesley
I visit RC - not as often as I come in here - and have always found it to be abrasive and argumentative It's quite scary and I rarely post and never dare ask a question
Guest
The only other forum I post on is moneysavingexpert.com although sometimes people there are downright rude but its worth it for the money I save! And I've had TWO personal replies from Martin - although neither were about money. Seems we are both scrabble playing crisp addicts! I read INEBG but have not signed up/posted I read digital spy when I need to know something of that nature.
Lailapet
I used to belong to a forum about rescued greyhounds. We had one for about 10 months, she was lovely but something went wrong and she started snapping at little children. One day she even snapped at our own daughter who was 3 at the time and I realised we couldn't keep her and took her back to the charity we got her from. I got such a lot of trouble from some people on that forum that I had to leave - well, as I didn't have a rescued greyhound anymore I suppose there was no need to be on there, but they really made me doubt my decision to get rid of her although I thought it was fairer on the dog. I belong to some mailing lists too and we have rules about "going for the ball, not the man". The only other online forum I visit is Thunderonline (my favourite band) and it's very well moderated, just like this place. I have worked as a moderator for Sony Playstation and I took great pleasure in deleting or changing offensive posts. People really ought to behave themselves, right? Of course people all disagree and there is no point in having forums (fora) where we all agree, there'd be nothing to discuss, but there is a big difference between putting other people down to make yourself feel more important or just arguing a point. I think this is a fantastic forum. Lots of you are very passionate about your chooks and/other interests but you like to share your enthusiasm and offer help when asked and most importantly the atmosphere is friendly. Fantastic! bronze
I found out about the eglu on the inebg forum so have been on there quite a long time and it definitely has a good side. I belong to a few fora but only regularly post on a few. Only one other is as nice as this one though and I'm a mod on it

Ain't Nobody Here
It must the chicken-owning that makes us all chilled and laid-back and friendly and polite and helpful and ... well, rather lovely people . I think you're all great - I was thinking of posting just the other day about how kind and caring everyone is. You can post about absolutely anything - trivial, important, personal, general wittering (usually me ), query .... and you always get an immediate, friendly, helpful answer (or two ). Long live the Omlet Forum and all who sail in her . Edit: does everyone now go about their daily lives and often think, I must post about this or that or the next thing, or is it just me . Snowy
I like that term Laila - "go for the ball, not the man" This is the first forum I have ever used, but I have since peeped into others. I agree they can be scary places! This one is lovely - I feel so at home here!
One Man Banned
I used to use the Volvo owners forum for help and advice with the cars and pop on regularly - it was their forum in the end that helped me decide to leave the actual club as they stated their "uselessness" with Volvo UK over a defect on the V70's that was featured on Watchdog. They didn't want to get involved - a club to represent members tho I found out about Omlet and the Eglu through the INEBG book but haven't ever really used a forum like this one ever before. And I love it Through keeping chickens I have made some wonderful friends, met some great people and have a laugh and cry at the same time It's the people that make this forum what it is, a happy and very friendly place A xx
Lailapet
How many forum members does it take to change a lightbulb? 1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs 1 to move it to the Lighting section 2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section 7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs 5 to flame the spell checkers 3 to correct spelling/grammar flames 6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" .. another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid 2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp" 15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct 19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb forum 11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum 36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty 7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs 4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's 3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group 13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too" 5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy 4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?" 13 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs" 1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again. Cate in NZ
I've registered with a few other fora, but really this is the only forum that I post on regularly, although there are 2 others that I visit regularly and exchange PMs on (and neither are anything to do with chickens ). RC, Prac Poultry and Poultry Keeper terrify me, worth visiting for the wealth of experience and information if you have an obscure chicken (or other livestock) type question, but too many aggressive, assertive, expert on everything types onthem for me . Great resource though, I can't quite believe how much information is available on just about every topic under the sun on a vast assortment of fora, and how helpful the vast majority of forumites are when someone posts with a query.
