Battery Hen Update

Recommended Posts

First off I had an email this week from Jane Howorth and she has asked if I will take on the role of educator and investigator 8) . I have jumped at the chance to help in a more formal way so will let you know what it's all about when I speak to her soon.

If you have any ideas of foods and products to investigate please let me know. I am currently working on chicken manure pellets and have found a british free range supplier, also burns pet food guarantees no battery hens are used in their pet foods :D

Just thought you might like to see the independent from yesterday. Piece by Jane and also mentions the eglu.

I will be at the pancake race with my leaflets on the 28th so hopefully that may raise some awareness locally and I hope Omlet can join me or get a stall there next year.

Thanks again for everyone's adoptions and card buying at christmas, it makes such a huge difference.

Thanks. It's a year in march that I heard about the BHWT and I've hoped that I could get involved in some way. I had thought I could go to a farm and help with the rescue but this is more helpful to them as they have their volunteers already set up for that.

The Omlet cards raised about £200.00 for them so that's great news too.

What a complelling article. I would love to home some battery hens but am worried that my girls will pick on them? Is this a problem or do they stand up for themselves? My chickens are currently in a pen which is 10ft by approx 20ft with a eglu and pen in the middle I have 4 girls at the moment does anyone have an idea how many I could keep in this area (obviously with some more accomadation). Do you know when the next rescue is in my area?

Check out the website www.thehenshouse.co.uk. for lots more details and by all means call Jane. You will find her details on the website and her email.

She usually re homes 3 or more in case one dies but again that can be different in some circumstances. They are delicate at first but are tough cookies (they have had to be to survive), they need careful attention after their stressful lives and rescue and careful introduction but I know if you take your time it can be so rewarding for you and they have a lovely life. she is always pleased to hear from anyone interested and is happily 'very busy' after the exposure yesterday.

Thanks for bringing this up.

Ah thanks Mel and yes wouldn't it be good. I haven't got any rescued girls but decided to start with my Eglu and girls last year, to learn more and get used to chickens but as I went to the rescue last year having only had them for about 8 weeks I have now learnt alot and can tell a vent from a wattle!

I hope we all get to live more of the dream, I think I am living a small version of it right now! :D

I also have no children, well our 'family' do keep us busy but you know what I mean, so I have the luxury of time too.

Right here I am raising the BHWT again. I have now spoken to Jane found out more about what is needed and am starting today.

I will begin with pet foods and will cover salad drssings and ice cream/christams cakes this year I hope.

I am going to be investigating products and they will go into the BHWT newsletter (quarterly). I will source hen friendly products and also find those that are common place but use spent battery hens or battery eggs. I will compare prices and find out places they can be bought. It's hard for people to know where the eggs or hens are hidden so my job is to help make it easier.

Well taht's the update. Also the la la la AF is slowing down adoption so any one able and ready to adopt give her a call.

Thanks :D

Thanks Clare.

A sorry realisation is that there aren't enough free range laying hens to supply the pet food industry so it is even more important to source those free range eggs and products as our pets can't be supplied with decent chicken :(

Your choice of petfood also makes a big difference and if you can't get what you want tell the manufacturer. I have some addresses so feel free to PM me

:wink::D

Thanks Buffster. I will get onto the case in a bit.

Thanks for the phone message - we must catch up soon; wish Mike a happy 40th for us; when is it?

It was a general message Clare so please don't think it was just aimed at you :oops::wink:
