Guest
Mel, just tell us! Have you lost the answer? It won't take you long and then we concentrate on your big interview . . .
Mel (& Paul)
OK Stop nagging and gather round children The ansewr is that the final egg is more likely to be even than odd. The remaining eggs before the final selection are 12, 15, 16, 18, 19,20 and 21. Of the remaining 7 eggs there is a 4/7 chance of selecting an even one and a 3/7 chance of selecting an odd one. So this final egg is more likely to be even than odd. OK Now can someone explain the answer to me.............
pianissimo
Yippee!!! Out of our misery at last! Thank you Mel.

pianissimo
Now, to explain... If you are making a choice between, say, two things, then one of the choices may be more likely than the other, or not. If I have a bag of chcocolates (don't get distracted ), and half of them are milk and the other half plain (that's exactly half of each) then the chance of getting either sort is equal; 1/2, or 50:50 (however you want to express it). Imagine there are are 20 altogether (concentrate!) if you pick all of them, you will end up with 10/20 of each. so the probability is 10/20 for each type. By contrast, if you have to pick a Scrabble letter from a bag, the chances of it being, say, E are more than Z because there are more E tiles than Z ones. If you pick all the tiles, you will end up with 100 tiles, with 12 Es (12/100ths) but only one Z (1/100th). Applying this to your egg problem, the important thing is not the number of different types (2), nor particularly the total number of eggs (7). It's the quantity of each type that counts. We have 4 even ones and 3 odd ones. So if we pick them all out we will inevitably get 3/7ths odd and 4/7ths even. So that is the probability of the first egg falling into those categories. I hope that helps, Mel...

chocchick
I need to get to work I got lost on the chocolate explanation too. Good luck on interview (again) in case I forget later on. Yay I was right!!!! Simple there are 7 eggs, and more of them are even , so you are more likely to pick an even one. I can go back to my PhD without because I got it wrong Yep need to get shower and go to work.... No really (what else is on forum?).....
