TAJ
The netting arrived from Eglu today, 9 days after the chickens and clipped their wings at the weekend, so they have had their first taste of free-ranging! I watched them all afternoon, but they seemed fine - all managed to hop on top of the run and seemed to struggle with the concept of having to walk to the run door to get out. When one was in the run and two outside she was looking for a back door in the eglu to get out and join them! Tracy
Roxanne
It's great fun letting them out with the netting - mine loved it last year! Just make sure you have pinned it down between the stakes as they can find a way out - so much for chicken brains ! I used the red twisty pegs that Omlet sell - and every time we moved the fencing they were moved too, and lasted well, only 2 broke over the whole summer. chelsea
You did well to keep them in for 9 days, so they got nice and settled before they were let out (I wasnt that patient ) Its so nice to see them out and about in the garden, it will be fab in the summer as they days are so long. Eyren
I keep my netting pinned to the ground using galvanised steel pegs from the Organic Gardening Catalogue - they worked out rather cheaper than the Omlet ones (which are designed to secure the run skirting against enthusiastic foxes, not keep naughty bantams off my lettuce!). AJuff
It's lovely to see them free ranging for the first time. I am amazed by your patience. I've only managed to keep the new girls in for four days and today when got home from work I let them out free ranging for the first time. I have kept the old and new girls separate during the day time, they were near each other, could see each other but not peck at each other. They seemed fine all out together, just the odd peck to let them know they were noticed. To my surprise they all snuggled up in the eglu together! TAJ
I wasn't being patient waiting 9 days, it is just we back on to a field and footpath and there are holes in the fence (so the cat doesn't have to jump too high), hence until I got the netting I was too scared to let them out. We got them out individually at the weekend to check and clip there wings. Hubby working at home tomorrow, so I will have to trust him to watch over them. I moved all the posts on the netting, so they are closer together, so it is tighter to the ground - but I will keep an eye on them anyway.
