Lone Ranger
Hi, well the new chickens arrived today (Posh & Pecks) and are checking out their new home - Very Exciting !! With the delivery also came the bits I'd seen on here as essentials including Garlic Powder, Grit and Poultry spice. So the question is how often do I give them each of these ? I'll get in a right old mess if I try adding all of them to the feed at once !! Also, do I put the grit in a seperate little bowl - or in with their feed with everything else ?? I'm off out to see what they're up to - don't think they've ventured into the Eglu yet ....
Eyren
I put mixed grit in a spare feeder (one of the old-style peanuts that came with my secondhand eglu). Poultry spice I mix into treats such as tinned sweetcorn or tuna, to make sure they get some - I've tried garlic powder but my girls turn their beaks up at it
Boris70
Hi, Grit I put in a little pot for them. Poultry spice and garlic I just lix in with the mash (I changed to mash rather than pellets as the local poultry place said it keeps them occupied for longer - and it sure does. it was also easier to mix everything in with). chelsea
I have a seperate grub in the run full of grit and my girls help themselves as and when they need. Poultry spice I add all the time to their pellets. Im never very accurate with the dosage, I just sprinkle over pellets and swirl around with my finger! Ain't Nobody Here
Hi LoneRanger - glad your girls have arrived! Hope you have plenty of spare time to sit and watch them . I mix my garlic powder and poultry spice in with my pellets in a large-ish box. It coats the pellets and the rest sinks to the bottom to get used next time I fill the box. Not very scientific but seems to work.
Cheshire Chooks
Poultry spice one teaspoon per week mixed in with that days pellets. Grit mixed in with new bag of pellets when emptyed in to metal bin. Garlic powder 1 teaspoon mixed into each gallon of water!!!! Which just proves there is no science to all this and just do what seems ok to you!!!!
Olly
I mix all three in with the pellets - I have an old plastic jar that had Roses chocolates in, and I fill it about an inch from the top with pellets, add a couple of handfuls of grit (very scientific!), a scoop or two of garlic, and a shake of poultry spice (depends how hard I bang the tin, as it's all stuck together!) Seems to work for me. I like to mix up a jar full at a time, it saves me time in the morning and it's also useful if anyone else is coming in to feed the girls, saves having to leave detailed instructions. Lone Ranger
Thanks all, and good point Olly about making it up in batches for when you need helpers. I was starting to think they'd never get the hang of actually going into the eglu and be up all night - but they both went in once it got really dark - hopefully they'll settle in quickly. Have now got endless streams of visitors to make tea for as all our friends and relatives want to 'pop over' to have a look
jomaxsmith
I've got a little bowl for grit from the pet shop that's meant for caged bird food so it has hooks to hang it from the mesh. I found if I put grit in a bowl on the floor they just kicked it over. It also means I can keep an eye on how much they're eating of it. Ain't Nobody Here
I put my grit in one of these: http://www.farmrite.co.uk/product.ds2?p=150436&ba=150436&q=1&x=70&y=7 It clips on as well as so is quite secure.

KimW
Yep, done that, ordered 3 grit feeder pots, two for my chickens, one for my mums plus a hat and two rubber fake eggs!
