chelsea
my hubby also works nights, so trys to sleep during the day. I wouldnt worry about it too much, it doesnt go on for ages, it does sound loud (seeing as the breed I bought is supposed to be quiet!! ) so dont let it put you off. If I laid an egg im sure I would be loud and proud too !!!

Kayte
is there anything you could put between them and your neighbours house? trees, tall shrubs, a sail, a wind break, anything like that could help with the sound. It would be a real shame to have to give them up... its not an unpleasant sound, and maybe those boys could do with a few early mornings anyway... its character building
Egluntyne
It is interesting that your neighbour has suggested that you let them out earlier! I'm not sue that the free ranging would have any effect on the size of the eggs...but it might have an effect on the frequency.
witch-1
Hi We had problems with one of our neighbours (at back - we have one each side) her dogs kept coming in to our garden (digging under the fence) to get at our chooks. This was resolved when the police had to get involved. We also have noisy chooks at times - they make noise when spooked or the gate goes so a great burglar alarm. As for your neighbours saying their boys are woken by them - I have to wear ear plugs at night if I wish to keep my window open because I'm a light sleeper and the dawn chorus wakes me. So in my opinion if its not one type of bird it will be another... kids sleep through most of it and I'm sure they're not woken daily by your chickens. Have they actually come to you and complained? If not, then I wouldn't worry. Your doing your best - follow some of the suggestions on here and then you've done your bit. Jan
Egluntyne
Our dawn chorus is deafening too! THe chooks certainly can't compete. Welcome to the forum witch-1. Great name.
Treekeeper
Kids woken by chickens I don't believe it Earth quakes, radios, lights on full, nuclear bomb Tried 'em all to wake my two one boy one girl on a school day a bit of chicken noise waking 'em up no chance! chickencam
my 3 don't even wake up if the burglar alarm goes off which is very loud and has been set off a couple of times by spiders crawling over the sensors.

superjules
Another disbeliever here! I used to wash my kids' hair while they were asleep (both went through a phase of hating having it done), so I'd be very surprised if a couple of chickens woke these children. Do your neighbours have double glazing?

Clur
If it's any reassurance I really doubt the children would be disturbed by chickens if your neighbours have double glazing. We live in a modern housing estate, our garden is very overlooked by our neighbours and the eglu is underneath our son's bedroom window (and next to ours). I am a fairly light sleeper and have never been disturbed by the chickens. Our neighbours have also commented that they never hear them. Is it possible your neighbour isn't keen on you having chickens and is using this as a convenient excuse?

cluckbok
I agree with you all, it's a fact, dogs bark, cats meow, well chickens cluck as long as it's not a cockerel crowing every morning at 5am I can't see what they moaning about. I admit I was worried but as time is going on, the girls are really good, really quiet. We shut them in their house at night then we don't hear anything until we let them out again in the morning. Then they just make gentle little cluck noises but not much. No one can complain here, one of our neighbours has got a dog that's shut out in the garden all day barking! Lynn
Hello, Well the girls are still squawking. I was away for the weekend and thought my husband was going to do try the blackout routine, but you know what husbands can be like.... He did say the girls were noisy and he was woken up at 6am both Saturday and Sunday. Last night I closed them in and let them out this morning at 5.45am and threw in some corn, it seemed to quieten them for about 5 seconds. Our neighbours are the neighbours from hell (excuse the language). We have had so much trouble from them since they moved in. They hate us and our cats. Although I have never met the wife, I have heard her calling me all sorts of names - she has called me that posh ***** next door. Some of my neighbours thought I was embellishing stories of their arguments and the language they used until last week when Mrs Next Door had a full scale rant at two of our neighbours. They couldn't get a word in edge ways and she called them for everything. This was over the fact that her boys had climbed over another neighbours wall to retrieve their ball! My husband wants to keep the peace, but what peace can you have with these type of people? I wouldn't mind being a posh so and so, but you can't really be with a Northern Irish accent!!!!! Egluntyne
All this works to your advantage...you now have several witnesses who can confirm that she is a nightmare. I doubt the decibel count of the hens will outdo hers. The environmental Health people won't act just on her say so anyway, they would have to monitor on a couple of occasions....and how likely are they to turn up at 6am. Forget about her. Lynn
I called Environmental Health last week and told them I thought I might be the noisey neighbour!! The lady there said not to worry about it - what did our neighbour expect when our houses back onto fields - they shouldn't have moved there if they didn't want country noises!! It's still a bit of a worry though. The neighbour threatened he would kill our cats if he caught them in his garden. He thinks that because we have six that it is solely they who are fouling in his garden - he seems to have turned a blind eye to the eight cats in various houses on the other side. They are very unreasonable people. I hope they move soon. I should start a campaign!!!!
Egluntyne
Sounds lovely. Let him keep digging his own grave. It would be handy if he could make these threats in front of a witness!
baby bears mum
I'd rather be a posh **** than a common ****. I am equally sure that her kids aren't quiet (she obviously isn't) and the fact that their kids trespassed onto the neighbours property really doesn't leave them with a leg to stand on. It may be an idea to keep a diary of incidents that occur with this person just in case. I would seriously take no notice and if they do kick up with the EHO make sure you have the support of your other neighbours (and quite frankly with her behaviour I wouldn't think this would be a problem). Sit back and enjoy your chickens.
Mirkwood
Well i know how unreasonable people can be so i decided, after 2 nights of not sleeping properly ( worrying), to go and speak to the neighbour i was worried about regarding my chooks but i decided to be crafty. some of you may know that my neighbours cat had killed another of my quail last week, so when i went round to my neighbours last night i decided to tell a very small white fib . I said that we went to buy more quail and had settled on a larger breed so that the cat wouldnt be able to get them again, but the ones that fitted the bill where very very noisey so we decided to get chickens because they were more on the quiet side. I promised them they had nothing to worry about regards smell as i would make sure that they were always nice and clean. to my suprise they were very very pleasant about it and i feel better. I told them that if they had any worries to come round and i would do what i could to accomadate them. They aplogised for the cat Edited March 5, 2008 by Guest
cluckbok
Well good for you. Don't worry about it anymore. Neighbours are a pain in the wotsit. At least you not got a barking dog all day. I'm beginning to get used to our chooks and the lovely sounds they make, ours make just little clucks at the moment, hopefully it will stay that way. It's only cockerels that make the most noise I think. Anyway you enjoy your chickens.
chelsea
yes just put it all to the back of your mind and relax now. I have noisy chooks and I could worry myself lots if I tried, but no one has complained so I think its just me being paranoid. 3 eggs laid today and no noise at all....so mine dont make egg annoucements every time they lay an egg...which is great! Mirkwood
Do you know i have only had them since Sunday but oh how sweet they are they are quite scared at the moment but they allowed me the pleasure of touching their tail feathers tonight. I want to let them out but yesterday my daughter said she was watching them and a car horn sounded in the court (taxi) and they shot under their house....what do you think i should do ?????
