mcphail
Hi, I am looking for some new chickens. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on hybrids (e.g. Bovans Nera, Black Rock etc.) that they own. I am looking for lots of eggs but also for them to be very tame. Help would be appreciated. AJuff
I have a black Rock Darcy and she is both friendly and lays a terrific number of eggs too. All hybrids generally tend to be friendly especially if you spend time with them. Our friendliest hen is a brown Nick she's lovely too. Hen Watch
My Gingernut Rangers (from Omlet) are very friendly, very inquisitive and follow you around like dogs.. I think that's the Omlet name for them but not sure what they are called really. My Amber Star hybrid is also very friendly. She's a cream colour with bits of brown at the feather tip. peanut12
My gingernut is also the friendliest of ours and an excellent reliable layer. As for the name, aren't they the same as Meadowsweet rangers ? not sure
mcphail
Thanks for the replies. I shall take a trip up to our local supplier and just see what they have- they all sound like nice birds.
smudgley
Calder Rangers are placid, easy to handle, docile - good egg layers & beautiful to look at.............what are you waiting for - go & get some Calder Rangers.
Ain't Nobody Here
I have a Columbine, Pied Suffolk and Rhode Island Red - all pretty friendly and good layers. This thread might help with confusing names for certain breeds: http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19534
Cinnamon
Try Meadowsweet (google them) for a nice selection of friendly laying hybrids. I have several Meadowsweet hens & they are all lovely girls
Egluntyne
I find my Pepperpots far more skittish than my Gingernut Rangers. Lovable and inquisitive, but not as easy to catch.
