Cube advice.

Recommended Posts

Our lawn looks trashed! :( OH blames the hens and would like them to stay off the grass until it has recovered a bit. I am debating buying a cube for them if they would have enough room in the run to stay in for a few weeks. Is a 2m run big enough for them to live in? It looks small to me.

We have six in a standard run, and I think it is a bit on the small side too. Ours haven't been out much lately either as I am doing a lot of work in the garden and they like to help a bit too much!

I think 4 would be fine in that size run all the time but it does look cramped with six. Hence new run under construction shortly!

Our lawn is no more so I intend to corden an area off at the end of the garden exclusively for the ladies and reseed the lawn, or dig it over and fill it full of veg

Thanks for that. I am still thinking things over with the space I've got. If i can get out tomorrow without getting snowed on I'll measure up their exisiting space and see what can be done. I might take some pictures and ask the forum's advice. Everyone is so good at offering advice it's great.

I see your from Teeside! I was born in Middlesbrough and grew up in Eston. I left in 1992 but have family in Marton and Normanby. Are you anywhere near there? I wouldn't mind visiting your cube if your nearby if that would be ok?

Hi There,

When we first got our cube, we had just the six hens in the run with extension. That looked fine for the six. Once the others started arriving we had to put the bigger run up, but we knew we would have to do that.

So with your six I would say get the cube with extension. Maybe just let them out for a free range for an hour before bed or something.

We are very lucky as we have loads of space here, however I was so unprepared for how much the garden would be trashed. It must be really hard if you have a smaller garden, bless you, I hope you sort your run problem out, and your hubby is happy with what you decide :D .

Felt the same way, want my chickems but also want a nice garden!!! (Not the biggest garden in the world 50 feet x 30 feet)

We have 5 girls and kept them in a cube with a 1m extension. we would let them out at the weekends but due to work they had to stay in during the week. Some times they didn't look very happy with us so 2 weeks ago I drove up to Omlet HQ and bought another extension.

The difference in the girls could be seen straight away they are not so bunched up and have that little bit more room which has made all the difference to there way of life.

It has also given us back our garden without the pooh.

I have a cube and it wasn't enough room with the single run for my 4 Omlet girls - instead of buying the extension, I bought the netting fence and was able to move it around the garden while the exhausted patch recovered. I kept the hens in the run until lunchtime to ensure they ate lots of pellets then let them forage in the grass. I have the admit the grass does take a battering and you need a good 3-4 weeks during the growing season for it to recover. I had to fill in and reseed areas that had become dust baths.
