silver laced wyandottes

Recommended Posts

Hi toes! It's probably a bit early in the year for young pure-bred chickens - most breeders have only just started hatching. (That said, my SLW lays all through winter, albeit only about 3 times a week!)

Have you looked in the breeders' directory in Practical Poultry? I just had a flick through the latest issue and saw a couple who list wyandotte bantams amongst their breeds...

Where else might sell SLW nearish to London?

My son has seen a picture of one and says he wants an SLW when we go to buy his hen (our current two girls official belong to his two sisters).

Called Wernlas (even though its far from London) and they completely sold out of everything apparently.

I know it's still "early in the season" for pure breeds, but I've come to realise that the early bird catches the worm so to speak! And unless I get on a list now, I'm unlikely to get him an SLW!

BTW - will it be ok to mix a pure breed SLW with hybrids?

My experience with my own bantam SLW is that they are very business-like when it comes to finding enough to eat and laying eggs and exempt from getting involved in chook politics or being very sociable! I don't know how that translates to the full sized version but my bantam is a very muscular bird, built like a Russian shot-putter, she's the loudest of all my hens and can kick bedding the furthest!! She's a handful, to say the least, but she's lovely to look at and a great layer!

Thanks Superjules - so it would seem they can mix, which is good.

I'm going for two more hens. I want a Skyline (as per my previous threads) and son wants the SLW. That should keep us occupied for a bit I'm sure.

Any tips from anyone on where to get a SLW would be very much appreciated!

If you want a bantam SLW, I'm sure Thorne's in Letchworth will have some in the next batch of pure breeds, although I'm not sure when they'll be ready as there were no signs of any chicks last week. They also have a new delivery of 200-ish hybrids every month, which hopefully will include skylines/columbines most months, so if you time it right, you may be able to introduce the two together.

I don't know where you'd have to go to get a full sized SLW, I'm afraid. Have you looked in the back pages of Practical Poultry?

Yep - Thornes is definitely on the radar re the Skyline.

All the SLW I have found so far are bantams and I don't know whether that would be tricky with the other three being full sized. Have tried P.P. magazine but maybe look again this month. Have found full sized GLW or bantam SLW at The Garden Hen but really want a silver full sized one!

Want to introduce Skyline and SLW both at the same time for obvious reasons, so this might end up being impossible, but will try at least to see if I can do it...

You're right, I wouldn't have just one bantam amongst a load of full sized hens, I think that's asking for trouble, although some people would say I'm a bit unrealistic mixing bantams and hybrids, but I did take advice and I have 2 henhouses so I have the option to keep the bantams separate if needed. I think if you don't have other options and you really need it to work, sods law says it will go wonky.
