HasSumAmi
Ginger is lying down in the middle of the run with her wing tucked under her wing. Omlet is circling around her. She wont move even when we go out and call her, whereas normally she would be running around. Is she laying an egg? Is she sick? Sorry - but never seen her like this, am supposed to be going out, but realy worried about her. How normal is this behaviour? Should also add - she is lifting her head up, and she sort of fluffs out her back feathers and her tail feathers are moving slightly up and down in a sort of trembly way... puffball
No to worry you but I don't think that is normal. Could she be having a dustbath? She might have broken her wing so I would [very gently] examine her if you can without moving her too much and if all is not well take her to the vet. That is my opinion but I am not the most experienced person. Hope she is alright and good luck!
Egluntyne
Hmmmm...to be honest I'd be inclined to wade in and pick her up and examine her. Just a thought though...is she dust bathing? They go into a sort of ecstatic trance and kick their leg and flap their wings. It can look a bit alarming. The first time I saw it I thought my hen was having a seizure. HasSumAmi
I couldn't take it and have examined her. She's seems fine actually!! She wasn't having a dust bath as I've seen one of those. Perhaps she was just having a rest and just couldn't be bothered to jump up as she normally does. Maybe she her body is doing new stuff and she was just working those feelings out. I don't know!!!! It was the way Omlet was circling which worried me, Anyway, I've given her some treats, which she has eaten and seems perky. I have to go out now - which I don't really want to do to, but she seems a lot more normal now. Thanks for being there...

Westie
Hello How old is she? Has she layed eggs before? If she look as if she is straining at the rear it could well be that she is trying to pass an egg, it may be a soft shell (see previous thred Bizzarre....but true?) When Peppers passes one, she can stumble and pant and it is quite horried to see them like that. Not even corn can get her moving. Have you tried to pick her up and have a look at her rear? The only thing I have done is got a tissue and gently massaged her - I think more for my benefit than hers - just feel helpless doing nothing. Hopefully she will soon be ok again - perhaps tomorrow. If you are worried then you could keep her in a box in the warm over night. Others will be much more experienced than me. Try not to worry too much Westie

HasSumAmi
Just got in and went to check her first thing. Both girls seemed fine - bit sleepy but fine. Can't see an egg or anything like a soft egg, so goodness knows what it was. One of them laid their first egg this morning (not sure which). Maybe Ginger is getting ready to lay... Maybe she was basking in the glory of having been the first one to lay!? Maybe this... maybe that... I haven't got the foggiest, but she's OK so I'm happy/relieved! This chicken lark is like having you first baby! Every burb from either end and you're panic stations.
