janem4
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie and the proud owner of two 4 week old chicks. I was told they were Rhode Island Reds but having looked at photos don't think they can be. I can't upload a photo but they have pale yellow fluff and are sprouting pale lemon with a hint of apricot wing and tail feathers. Can anyone hazard a guess as to the breed as I need to know if they are going to be large or medium so I can get the right size house. Ain't Nobody Here
Hello Janem4, welcome to the forum . I have a Rhode Island Red but never saw her as a chick so can't help I'm afraid . Hopefully someone will be along soon with experience .
Egluntyne
These are Rhode Island Red chicks. Do they look anything like yours?
Snowy
Unless they are RIR x light sussex chicks. In which case they will be yellow - and male
janem4
Hi Egluntine, those chicks are darker than mine. Mine look like the photos of the Light Sussex or Buff Cochin chicks on this link: http://www.shropshire-poultry.co.uk/index_files/Page680.htm. So Snowy you could be right but I hope not! They came from my daughter's school who sexed the chicks.
feemcg
These are RIR x Light Sussex chicks (ginger= girls, white=boys). Sorry, don't have any at 3/4 weeks (surprisingly ).
janem4
Thanks for all your advice and to feemcg for posting that lovely photo. My daughter tells me the males were not as dark as this, she reckons very little difference. I am waiting for the school to contact the egg supplier to check. Will let you when I hear... Ain't Nobody Here
Fee, those chicks are so cute . That was another "hey, boys, come and look at this!" moment .
janem4
It seems, as I feared, the school got into a muddle and gave us the males by mistake. Unfortunately the family who got our girls does not want to swop. So if anyone wants a boy to keep their girls happy please let me know. I am a bit despondent as we were so excited about the chicks. Thanks all for your help though. At least we found out sooner rather than later.
superjules
Oh what a shame janem4. I'm not surprised the other people don't want to give you the girls back, but it's not really cricket if they'd initially agreed to take the boys.
