Motor Home or Caravan?

Recommended Posts

There has been a lot of chat recently about camper vans and caravans......

I'd like to know what you all think about them? I'm interested in a motor home type as I don't like towing very much...............

Carl would prefer a caravan as it means you can use the car once you've parked up on a site.

Any thoughts??

I think it depends how long you intend to stay in one place doesn't it? The motorhome is ideal for short stays. Pull up and put the kettle on - no messing about. Then just drive away when you've had enough. Travelling is no problem, we used to find somewhere secluded and pull over, make lunch, have a brew and a rest, then drive on again. If you want to stay somewhere longer, you can get an awning. I've no experience of caravanning, but think it would be better for longer stays in one spot. In the motorhome we used to stay in a new place every night, great for exploring! 8)

Snowy has hit the nail on the head Lesley. It depends how long you are staying in one place.

We have a caravan and love it :) . Its very spacious, has a proper cooker and a full sized bathroom with wardrobes and full sized shower - so we have the comforts of home.

However when we get on site, it takes approx 1 hour to get set up (level caravan/put up awning etc). When a motorhome parks up next to us - it parks and plugs in the electric...so very simple and easier. I do see some motorhomes with awnings which must be a pain in the bum because everytime they want to go out - they must have to take it down! :?

I think its a personal choice really, do you want all the comforts and more space ? if you want a spacious motorhome with full bathroom/bed etc you would be looking at big money. Caravans are cheaper, but then you have to think about a tow car, and security (as caravans are pinched quite often).

We will eventually get a motorhome, we would like to tour europe when we are older. With a motorhome you can stop anywhere and have a cuppa.

lots to weigh up, but whatever you choose its a really cheap holiday (we've stayed on some sites for £6 a night!) :D

we went for a camper van as it's easier to drive than towing a caravan plus the fact that we only have a micra and the engine doesn't have enough power to tow a caravan, so we'd have to have changed our car to also get a caravan

Thanks Snowy.

I don't even know why I'm asking - we can't do anything on a whim these days as we have to sort out cover for the farm

I was wondering which option would give you the most space for all the animals!:lol:

you can get 'drive away awnings' that stay in place when you go go out sightseeing in the camper. We had one when we had a motorhome and it keeps your pitch too :)

We have one of those.

I like my VW because its only the same size as a car (it is my car in fact) but I think as you 'mature' you want more home comforts and therefore a larger camper...At that stage it also gets more expensive to drive around as well - and it is a pain if you do want to get out and about and you have to tidy up/secure everything before setting off (that is when the awning comes in handy too).

So I reckon a caravan is better for some people (unless you do what I have seen some people do - have a camper and a smart car on the back

We have talked about switching to a caravan (especially as OH has a big pickup as a company car - ideal for caravans) but I love my purple Bay too much to give it up just yet. We are going to try and keep it now till Layla is 18, then she can have it.

When we were in Oz we had a 1975 Toyota Coaster that we converted which was FANTASTIC - we wanted to drive it back here but it would have fallen apart at the first sign of rain  We just pulled up wherever and drove off when we'd had enough of somewhere. Over there they are the masters of travelling, they had enormous 52 seater coaches converted into motorhomes with trailers towing a small family car!! Best of both worlds!

We drove the whole way round Australia, well most of the way round in a figure of 8, twenty three thousand kilometers, and 9 months. Middle child was born in a small sugar cane town in Northern New South Wales at the end of our trip. Wow, you've really got me reminiscing now - we LOVED our old coaster bus. :D
