bennyboy
Hello (again), Currently pacing around the garden with my son...I've found a nice spare section of our small garden for the eglu, but half of the length is permanently in the shade. Would this be a major problem? The site is against a fence, so it's sheltered but could just be a little bit dark. Thanks for helping me out! Egluntyne
Far from being a problem, a bit of shade is a good idea. With the relentless sun beating down in the summer, as it does in the UK. it will give them a bit of respite. On the other hand if it is a dank and damp spot....it might not be such a good idea. I must have missed that summer Egluntine Ben - my walk in run is half in the shade and I think it's a good idea - the girls decide if they want to be in the sunshine or not As Egluntine says - just make sure the ground wont be damp for them. Guest
The run at my old house was in a shady spot, and we had big problems when it rained - it would turn the run into a complete mudbath, to the point that the poor chickens would be up to their little frilly bottoms in mud sometimes. We had incredibly bad drainage which added to the problem, so I would consider how well your soil drains before making any decisions. BarbaraJ
That can be difficult as none of my garden drains well. thats why i went for a covered run with a thick layer of aubiose. Not much else i can do really. I picked the best spot which gets early and late sun in the summer.
Ain't Nobody Here
If you cover your run so it doesn't get too soggy you may be OK. I would use loads of hemcore or aubiose which doesn't get wet too easily.
bennyboy
Thanks for all your advice. Spent the afternoon stood in the garden working out possible areas; think I'm going to make a permanent bed in the shay/slightly sunny spot. Anyone know of any on-line dealers for hemcore/aubiose? moomin
I haven#t really found any online dealers - best to look in the yellow pages to find horsey type places. That said, I think there's been a shortage lately, I bought a bale of Easibed in the end, quite a few people use it on here I think it's a good alternative
