Q.O.M
Hi Have just been sorting out my larder and discovered 3 bags of 'Broth Mix' - containing split green and yellow peas, barley, and lentils. It is organic and free from just about everything and just in date! - but can the chickens have it?? Cooked, soaked or uncooked??? -as I will never get through 3 packets now that summer is upon us!! (or before it goes out of date!) Many thanks Lucie
Stevie
I cant see why not.Its only vegetables and theres nothing there which i would deem as dangerous!
Olly
Cooked, they will love it, although not too much at one time as it will fill them up and they won't eat their pellets! I wouldn't give it uncooked though, because they will swallow it, drink water and it will swell up inside their crop and can cause problems. This applies to anything that soaks up water, including bread, porridge etc - I don't know if just soaking would do, I'd be inclined to cook it to be on the safe side. mrsm_jones
I have made up my own "mixed corn" of popcorn seeds, lentils, pumpkins seeds (good for eggs rich in omega 3! ) barley and buckwheat and with no ill effects! I thought it would be a bit of a waste to buy a huge bag of mixed corn just for 4 hens. I would have thought that broth mix would have been fine. I think they more or less know what's good for them, and if they didn't like it, they wouldn't eat it.
Hen Watch
I would cook it first too and try them on just a little bit. Has it got salt in it though????
Q.O.M
Hi Many thanks - I will cook a 'trial batch' and see how it goes down - 30 mins in the pressure cooker should do it as it has been soaking all day -

Cinnamon
You can just buy bags of ready made mixed corn. Not sure you can buy it all seperately..... Wiggly wigglers do a good range of things - I often buy corn, mealworm mix & indigo wheat to mix up & feed as a once a week treat.
Q.O.M
HI THANKS FOR ALL YOUR REPLIES. HAVE TRIED THE GIRLS ON IT AND THEY LOVE IT!!!! JUST WONDERED IF THIS IS A BETTER OPTION THAN PORRIDGE?? THANKS LUCIE
mrsm_jones
silly questin prob but were do i buy all the items to make my own "mixed corn" I bought it all from the Tesco seed and nut aisle! They have it next to the Gluten free stuff! Little bags of pumpkin seeds etc. So you just make up as much as you need. I didn't want to buy 20kg of mixed corn, as it' only a treat food. I've just added another little bag of pumpkin seeds, at approx 48p, so my little eggs are richer in Omega 3 (Brain Food!)
TAJ
I wouldn't bother mixing my own mixed corn (this looks expensive) - in the local pet shop I can buy it by the Kg for £1 - althought this is more expensive than a 20Kg sack for the quantity I need as treats it is fine.
