Spog feels spongy!

Recommended Posts

Spog seems very under the weather and im wondering if you could give some advice as im very worried indeed :(:(:(

She was fine this morning but having been chook watching for a while just now i noticed she wasnt moving very much :?

When i picked her up her tummy felt VERY spongy and as i brought her down the garden to bring her in she leaked white liquidy stuff from her vent.

She is now in a straw filled dog crate in the garage.

The very top of her comb is a little dark too.

Any ideas what is wrong with her? :?:?:?

Hi Em,

Sorry, I missed this yesterday.

When you say she feels spongy, does she feel like she's got fluid in her abdomen or is it her crop which feels odd?

If it's in her abdomen, it could be peritonitis. If she's got a blue tinged comb and is breathing heavily, she may have an infection or she may have what Clarry had and the fluid isn't infected but is causing pressure on her other organs which puts stress on her heart. Can you get her to a vet to see what the problem is?

Spog has just been to the vets.

She does have quite a bit of fluid in her abdomen and if this turns out to be an edema it looks like it could be terminal :cry::cry:

The other possibility is that she could just have an infection - please let it just be an infection!!!

Spog has had an injection of Baytril and has a course of antibiotics. She is going to go back and see the vet again on Saturday. Im hoping she is much improved by then

I do hope she can pull through, as is usually such a perky chicken and this is so out of character for her :(

Thank-you so much for your kind wishes.

I was so so worried about Spog last night i took her to see a different vet who diagnosed her with sterile perotinitis :cry::cry:

He has given me some Metacam to give to her but she looks so fed up and depressed. I am hoping it is a 'wonder drug' and will help her get back on her feet again.

Have any of you used this drug before?

If so what dose did you give and was the effect positive?
