Poor Sweeetie!

Recommended Posts

My hen Sweetie has been laying daily for over two months now.

Her normal eggs have a very good shell and she's had no problems. Recently about once a week she will have a day where she lays a lovely normal egg in the morning, then becomes unwell in the evening and overnight lays a soft shelled egg and a shelless egg(so that's 3 in one day). The next day she will be fine, and won't lay, but after that laying as normal.

I give them all limestone flour so I don't think it's a calcium issue and her other shells are great.I assume the eggs are soft as they've moved through her system too quickly. Is there anything else I can do to prevent this? Poor girl it makes her so unwell on the three egg day!

to me it sounds like you are doing everything right with the limestone flour/grit etc.

I think it must just be a phase  , there was someone on the forum about a month ago with the same scenario (a chicken laying more than 1 soft shelled egg in one day). She hasnt been laying for that long so maybe all her egg producing bits are still "settling in".

I know what you mean about it making them unwell though - it does make them dazed for a while.

Just keep an eye on her and make sure she is eating/drinking normally (which i am sure she is) and lets hope she gets over it soon. :)

Just to update. Am still worried about my sweetie. In the past four days she has laid 10 eggs of which three have been hard shelled and the rest soft. It's really taking it out of her poor thing! Am worried, how long can she carry on like this. Normally she lays three eggs in one day, then misses a day then goes back to normal, but this time she just keeps on laying all these softies. It's making her feel so glum :(

Hi,

It was me I think that posted a while back with exactly the same problem. She looked very unwell as it was taking it out of her and I was worried like you, especially as she is the smallest and at the bottom of the pecking order I thought perhaps she wasn't getting enough to eat. This lasted a while, but like previously mentioned passed eventually. About 3 weeks in total I think. She is the youngest and I think this was just a 'growing-up' phase. She's on track now & even gave me a 85g one this week (which I think is a double yolker)

Try not to worry too much, I know how you feel as I was really concerned too and when I thought this has gone on long enough I need to do something for her it all put itself right. Hope this puts your mind at rest a bit. Let us know how she gets on
