Hand, Foot & Mouth concerns

Recommended Posts

i'm 37 weeks pregnant (having a section at 39 weeks) and my 23 month old has Hand, Foot and Mouth.

I've looked it up, and the advice says to keep the child away from anyone who is in the final stages of pregnancy

Does anyone know how serious this is, and do I need to be doing anything or be concerned about coming into contact with it?

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon but in the meatime this is what NHS direct says:

There is normally no risk to your baby if you catch hand, foot and mouth disease during pregnancy. But, if you catch the virus shortly before having your baby, it can pass to the baby and they may need hospital treatment to avoid developing further problems. However, it is worth remembering that the virus is rare in healthy adults and, in reality, the risk of infection is low.

Whatever, it is really worrying for you at this time so I hope someone can give you some more advice to ease your mind.

Thanks Rona. I

I've been on the NHS direct site too and read the same. I guess it's natural for me to worry at this late stage. I'm not showing any symptoms so far. We've only just spotted Stefan's symptoms tonight though, and I can't help but be in very close contact with him. I guess if I was going to get it I would be showing similar symptoms by now too. He's been off colour for a few days and has a couple of tearful, sleepless nights - which we now what caused them.

Contact your midwife.

We have hand foot and mouth going around the playgroup here and I know that its worrying for those in very early and late stages of pregnancy. Adults don't tend to show strong symptons of it so I wouldnt go by that.

To be honest the worry would be if you didnt know you had it and had your little one.

I'm sure you'll be fine especially if you're in good general health.

Whoohoo only 2 weeks to go  You must be so excited. Do you know if its a boy or girl? Sorry if you have already posted this but it is difficult to keep up with it all nowadays.

Bron, I'm going to do that tomorrow. A good idea. And as you say at least I can tell them about it when baby is born, rather than not know at all. I do have a rather sore throat, but nothing else.

Rona, I haven't posted much about my pregnancy at all. I have no idea what I'm having. My hunch is a girl. As I am having a section I have the due date, time, place etc, so I needed a bit of mystery about what the sex will be, otherwise it I'd feel like I was going for a dentist appointment!

Hi :D

I had hand foot & mouth myself when I was pregnant with Cleo. I got all these odd little blisters all over my hands & feet & I remember not being able to push Devons pushchair without gloves on as it was so uncomfortable.

Can't remember how pregnant I was,but I do seem to remember carrying all in front of me so I am thinking it was in the later stages.

I went to the Doctors & she said there was no risk to the baby at all, & it would pass in its own time, which it did. I think I had it for about 10 days in all.

I am sure it will be fine, but best to check with your Midwife/GP :D

Thanks guys. Feel much better for asking adivce now. Stefan has had it before, so I probably have got some sort of immunity to it now.

I really was reluctant to look on the web as it does put the wind up me sometimes.

Mind firmly put at rest now anyway. :D

My Son had hand foot and mouth a few weeks ago. It started on the same day as my booking appt with the midwife. He screamed all the way through my appt.

I took him to the doctor the next day and told him that I was pregnant and worried about catching it. The doctor told me not to worry.

If you are concerned, call your local surgery and ask to speak to a doctor. they are the best ones to advise you
