ok basically chelmsford recycling is a pain in the butt. you have your household black bin, you have brown wheely bins for garden waste (i have 2), sacks for paper and another for card, and a (lidless) green box for cans/glass, and plastic clear sacks for plastics. now... i really hate that my garden is full of junk or 2 weeks while the rota works - its not that big ands looks really unsightly like steptoes yard i want something that i can hide my recycling in other than my shed, because its the end of the garden completely away from the gate- AND because i would forget about it

 

can anyone show me how you have it sorted???

We have a covered porch open at the sides and hubby has put a shelf in which holds the 2 recycling boxes that we have one of which i use for plastic bottles which have to taken to the local supermarket carpark bins and one for the glass, tins and paper for the council to collect under that I keep a big Tesco bag for life which we fill with all our cardboard and another smaller one for juice cartons.

 

We have then put up a tellis which we planted a Montana clematis up last year and it is now looking beautiful and obscuring most of the mess from view.

Sorry I can't help much. We have a black bin (outside on the drive), plastic box for bottles, also on the drive, degradable bags for garden waste, and EVERYTHING else (card, plastic, paper, tinfoil, aluminium) goes into just one bag, to Epping Forest DC for that! I still have to store the full bags for two weeks, luckily I have a garage.

 

It is difficult, isn't it. I'm looking for a kitchen bin which has two compartments, because at the moment I have a pedal bin with ordinary waste in, and a carrier bag for all the recycling stuff which is a real nuisance.

colour me jealous!!! i mean surely paper and card could go together really- but nope, different weeks for collection too i should hve mentioned- where i live is all set on walkways so our garage is set in a block away from the house so i cat even use that either- its so frustrating.

Count yourself lucky I have SIX brown garden bins, we hardly use the green box and you forgot to mention the CARDBOARD only gets collected once a month so its a MOUNTAIN by the time we put it out. I have to use my garden trolley to get it all down the drive.

I have a black wheelie bin which is collected weekly and being on my own most of the time rarely has more than one small bag in it

 

I have clear bags which are quite large for all plastics and metals and lavender bags again large for paper and cardboard which also gets collected weekly

 

I have oodles of storage space too

We have 5 green boxes which the council (SODC) provided, which everything goes into. They are lined up outside the back door & are a bit unsightly,but what can you do?

 

They don't recycle glass though, so I have a couple of wine carriers in a nook in the kitchen for the bottles & jars

Our council provide us with just a green wheelie bin for garden waste.

 

I have recently been on a rant to the local council about recycling in general.

 

I asked for another green bin but was refused. I have found out since that people living in flats with no garden are being issued with one and the council are having huge problems with people dumping them as they dont want/need them where they live!

We have 2 wheelie bins - one for landfill and the other for recycling which most recyclable stuff can go into - card, plastic, glass, paper etc. They sit by the side of our garage near the gate so they're out of the way and we have a fortnightly collection. We store all the recyclable things in a wooden Ikea chest in the dining room to save traipsing out of the house to put it in the big bit and when it's full, empty it all into the wheelie bin.

 

We've also got a wormery and a Dalek type compost bin. I've got 2 kitchen Bokashi composting bins but didn't get on with them.

oooh I forgot to mention. As well as having 6 brown wheely bins for green waste. I have 8 compost bins, 2 bokashi bins and a wormery (actually I still have another wormery too - must get round to Ebay'ing it!).

oh I'm envious - same council and they don't collect mine fortnightly - everything else gets collected fortnightly but the cardboard is once a month.

 

I have a few waterbutts now - I just had 2 more put in when I had the run extended - I also have one at the front which I intend to attach a second one too, they are for the veggie beds.

Our rubbish is still collected weekly at the moment - but is due to change I think. Green waste in green wheelie bins is collected fortnightly and other recyclables on the weeks in between. We can't put out cardboard, just paper and glass.

They are from Homebase and are far roomier than they look. They just about fit by the back door by the shoe cupboard. We use one for papers (mine ) and one for glass (Carl's ).

I have 2 green boxes for everything (Paper, cardboard, glass, batteries, oil, foil, cans, plastics etc) (apart from garden waste), 3 massive reusable sacks for garden waste and a huge sealable bucket thingy for the food waste. Then if there is still stuff that can't be recycled, it goes into a black sack. All of it is collected weekly too Its normally hidden in the back garden somewhere.

Ikea had these white boxes with angled lids and I bought one years ago - good idea to use them I had not thought of it - my sewing is in my one!. Need to look for a new sewing box..........

Our councils collects everything in refuse sacks. We have brown sacks for paper and cardboard and green sacks for plastic bottles and tins. We just have two kitchen bins either side of the front door.

 

For glass we have a plastic box outside by the trailer and we collect batteries in an old shortbread tin . These get taken to the tip when we go. We also have two plastic boxes under the stairs for tetrapaks and foil which we take to the recycling point ourselves.

 

We don't give the council any of our compostables, but they do collect it in green bags every two weeks. All other recycling is collected weekly, so we never have too much of it around the house.

Our council scheme has changed slightly without us really being told (can no longer put in yoghurt pots or plastic trays)so now we can recycle the following in green boxes with any extras put out in extra bags:

deodorant/hairspray aerosols

furniture polish / cleaning aerosols

washed foil takeaway trays

 

Then we can also recycle in green wheelie bins:

Brown Paper

 

We used to be able to put in the wheelie bin tea bags and coffee grounds but can't do that either now. Was told something to do with CJD and milk contamination but not sure if that's right

 

We also have a newspaper/paper collection on the same day.
