nursechick
eat slugs!!! Both my girls turn their noses up at my slug offerings.I had hoped they would be the first line of defence,in my organic war on the slimey little critters but no. What is it with slugs that they seem indistructable.Mind you I suppose you wouldn't give them a sideways glance if corn on the cob was also on the menu.Back to the drawing board. Nuggywoo
My ones tend to go for the little black ones or the very small 'beige' ones. It might be the slime which puts them off - it's quite viscous. Quite odd what they'll eat. My full grown girl will eat small or skinny worms only yet my 11 wk olds eat the fattest, biggest snakes you've ever seen! I was quite shocked at what I saw Frock eating today as I thought I'd have to perform the first Heimlich manoeuvre on a chicken...
Guest
we use crushed egg shells around the plants we want to keep the slugs away from, fingers x'd it's worked so far.
Olly
Mine won't touch slugs - it's been a great disappointment to me. They do love snails, though!
Snowy
Sometimes you need to show them what's inside is tasty first. Try snipping one in half with scissors or stomping on one. I did this with snails and mine love them now
Olly
Try snipping one in half with scissors or stomping on one. I just don't think I could ... it would have to be a very old pair of scissors that I was never going to want to use again! It would be so lovely if they ate the slimy little beasts though, I got slugged to death last year and every single courgette plant that I put out was eaten. nursechick
Same here. It was like a free for all in my veg patch last year. And it was such a good argument for getting chickens that I'm having to keep this little chicken quirk to myself! Stevie
Mine adore slugs-the bigger and more disgusting the better! I found some huge beasties yesterday and they were squabbling like children! Oddly though-they dont bother with snails which is another pest i have.
redhotchick
Oddly though-they dont bother with snails which is another pest i have. Someone did mention this above, Have you tried stomping on the snails to break their shells. I used to do this even before I got chickens. I figured the wild birds would eat them.
