Jules.
It was a year ago today that we went & got our girls It rained , and seemed to rain all summer I was so scared of my chooks it took me two weeks to attempt to pick them up, or top their food up while they were in the run in case I got pecked ( I never have been) The photo proves to any wannabe hens owners that hens, children & cats can co-exist & also that gardens can stay looking like gardens instead of turnig into mud baths Where my chooks are at the bottom of the garden it is shady & sometimes damp, so nothing much would grow there anyway ( eggcept eggs). I'm so happy I took the plunge to get hens
Stevie
You have a great looking garden and looks perfect for chookies. Its another example that poultry & a well kept garden can work in harmony with each other. I think threads like this are important for anyone contemplating getting chickens because i was warned that my garden would be trashed and seeing yours 12 months on is fantastic. Helly Welly
Happy henniversary Jules! The first winter after we got our girls they trashed the garden but we learnt our lesson. We built them a big run to stay in when the weather is foul and increased the width of the flower beds so they had more room to scratch around. This year, the garden looks fab

redhotchick
What a very pretty garden Jules. I love your little barbecue heater. Do you find that it does make a diffference? My garden didn't look that good before I got the chickens. It's got to get better though.....all the time I spend out there with them. SLK69
Ditto - our garden looks better, if I could work out (be bothered to learn) how to post pictures I would - I spend so much time wandering about picking up kids toys - raking up the moss the chooks kindly remove from the lawn. Is all tidy and lovely now. no plants though, just grace and woodchip border - low maintenance S p.s. wish this forum had automatic spellchecker - my spelling is quite shocking, in previous posts ! poachedegg
To light our Chimnea we use the all in one bbq bags - ie light the match and watch it burn! We put in a couple of logs and when the bag burns it starts the logs burning too. We found it the quickest way to light as OH couldn't get the logs on their own to catch. Jules.
B&M Bargains! I used the method my parents use to light their coal fire ( cept I didn't use coal ) I twisted some newspaper into long sticks, put it on the base then covered it with little bits of wood. When that all caught I put on bigger wood bits I'm going to save the wood ash for the chooks The bbq bag idea is a good one., thank you. Seagazer
It is so good for us newbies still waiting for our hens to arrive to hear nice stories (sometimes if you read too many threads it can make you worry ) and to see that your garden still looks good.
