Recommended Posts

Hi Rhapsody

Yes he's lovely was so helpful! I was so tempted by the goats, he has a gorgeous black and white pigmy kid at the moment.. what are you getting?

I've got 2 whethers on order- they will be the half-brothers of the ones I got last year. Wish you hadnt told me he's selling chickens now!

Amber stars are great. Ours is our boldest, greediest chook who jumps up at people like an excited puppy when they go in the run holding anything that looks like it might be food! She perches on shoulders too, although she's getting a bit big for that now!

Hybrids can give the purebreeds a run for their money in the looks department! I think my hybrid Magpie (pied suffolk) is my most beautiful chook, even prettier than my Silver-Laced Wyandotte, and my skyline Yaddle is rather lovely looking too, although obviously I love all my chooks equally!

Not exactly sure :?

Obviously getting all from same place so only about 4 to choose from..

I'm not exactly sure of the breeds as hard to remember..( was over excited at the time!)

There were pied something.. poss suffolks? DD poss choosing this one

Ranger/ISA types

Cooper Noir (Maran based hybrid looks like PepperPot)

Black Tailed Suffolk/ or Sussex?? these were so soft and friendly! OH likes this "normal" looking hen

Amber Stars- may have another one of these in pure white?

He is also hoping for bluebelles by time I go back..

I have pics so may post at later to see if I have remembered right!!

Egg lou, you are less of a novice than you think. You are right - Magpie's colours have gone wrong - she should have a much darker body with just a silver collar. I chose her (out of about 50 pied suffolks) because she looked different and caught my eye. She's a total darling.

Jules she is gorgeous! You are right, she does have a lot more silver on her. My new baby, Spice, is a pied and she has just the lovely silver collar. Some in the pen were nearly all black! They do seem to be lovely birds - mine is very friendly already and loves a cuddle! Nice to know she is likely to be a good layer as well - I didn't know much about them, just fell in love with the colour :lol:

Oh ta.. had another look at pic ..(system won't let me post it while at work) and with that knowledge I'm fairly sure they are Pied Suffolks..

Interesting you said they are quiet and friendly as these ones seemed to hold back more than the others while there and DD wanted one to cuddle.. being "quiet" sounds like a good idea too!

Don't forget they are still young and do react differently when you see them at the farms (apart from the odd exception like your amberstar - I had one that chose me and she has a superb temperament! 8) ) The pieds are likely to grow into large, fluffy cuddly hens so a good choice for children! Mine has had a few days to settle in and is showing signs of being friendly already, should be even better when she comes into lay :D

She looks very like Sylvie who we bought as a Silver Nova but might be the different breeders names? She's a real sweetie but an absolute ditz! Very clumsy and VERY vocal. She is absolutely beautiful though (will post a pic of her all growed up once I find the connector cable) but not blessed in the brains department. She's currently in the nesting box trying to hatch out an ice block....

Lou, if you're over this way you're welcome to come and have a look at her.

Thanks you both thats reassuring for DD.. except perhaps the vocal element!

Oh yes coming to see would be lovely! I think you have a bluebell too. is that right?

Might be worth me collecting the feed we discussed then and just bringing over?
