Tessa the Duchess
Is it true that you should stop feeding garden birds now the nicer weather is here, well almost here I feel that they should be eating nasty bugs that I don't want in the garden near my veggie plants, but does it really matter? chickencam
I think that it is all the more important to feed them, especially small bits which they can give to the babies. High protein and fatty foods. i would give mine meal worms but i think the girls might mutiny
Tessa the Duchess
Sorry I did a post reply instead of new topic. Would some kind mod move it somewhere and maybe call it 'Feeding garden birds'. How funny that I posted it in 'Am I too old for this forum?' clearly I am totally losing my marbles Tessa

AnnieP
There's a helpful page HERE on what and when to feed birds. Its really interesting. We always provide black sunflower seeds at this time of year. The goldfinches love them.
Tessa the Duchess
Thanks Clare That is an interesting page Annie P, obviously I have been under the wrong impression about summer feeding. I will get out there and fill up the empty feeders. This will also please the greedy squirrel who has been hopefully peering at the peanut feeder all weekend Tessa
Sheilaz
But I'm really glad you did raise it so we can all be clued up now following Annie's link. I thought the same as you Tessa, based I think on knowing that chunks of bread are the wrong thing to have out when babies & fledglings are around. lisaroo2
Both Hubbie-to-be and I are big birdwatchers and we always feed the birds all year round. It's just important to feed them at this time of time year as they've got youngsters to feed as well as themselves. Just make sure that if you put nuts out they're on in a feeder rather than on the table, that way the parents are giving small pieces to the youngsters and they won't choke, and certainly no bread fullstop! chocchick
Our garden is being devasted (well in a small way) by sparrows. I saw one chomp on a flower the size of its head and half the flower was hanging out from its beak leaving a half munched flower They're really tame and keep perching really close and stealing bits from our garden and the chicken pen.
