Blue egg layers

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I'm trying to find out which hybrid hens lay blue eggs - don't know if there is such an animal. I've got a gingernut ranger and 2 pepperpots who are fantastic and friendly. I like the idea of a blue layer but want something that is friendly - I've got young children who love stroking the chickens! :D

Thanks

There seem to be a couple of blue egg layer hybrids at the moment. The columbine/skyline is a hybrid Cream Legbar, but there does seem to be a shortage of them at the moment. The other seems to be a fairly new araucana hybrid, the Lawford Blue. They may have some here: http://www.warwickshirerarebreedfarm.co.uk/forsale.html

I don't know if they will be as friendly as the gingernuts/pepperpots though. Blue and white egg layers do tend to be a little bit more flighty.

Columbine's are a hybrid hen that lays blue eggs.........quite a pretty chicke n to look at too. Mine is a cheeky madam.

I have a columbine too, a very pretty hen but not overly friendly. They also are known as Skylines or Jasmines. 80% chance of a blue or green egg the rest lay pastel shades. I have two blue and one green egg layer and they are very nice too. :D

We have a Columbine aswell and she lays white eggs, as someone above said, it's 80% as to whether they will lay blue/green eggs. We don't mind though because she's our friendliest hen. She even comes in the house and loves a cuddle. She will let you stroke her just like a cat or dog. She's brill!

Hi Snowman,

I have 2 lovely Columbines that I purchased from Warwickshire Rare Breed Farm. They are both lovely birds and one of them has started laying regularly lovely, blue eggs. Initially they were very shy and skittish but I patients 'Banjo' loves being picked up and cuddled while Juno is still really shy but happily feeds out of my hands.

Another alternative to Columbines/Skylines are the Cream Legbars and Arucanas who both lay pastel shades of blue/green eggs. Good luck with finding some, they are becoming hard to find.

I would definately talk to Thornes in Herts. Its not too far for you and they are really helpful.

Last year they had some beautiful hybrids but I cant for the life of me remember what he called them. It may have been Fenton Blues. Anyway they had beautiful plummage and were quite curious of the children who were trying to feed them thru the panels so appeared quite friendly and their eggs were a lovely blue.

Their number is 04162675767 either Carl or Frank. They will be sure to tell you what they were called and if they will be getting more.

Good luck

Troy
