Scotty
Can anybody tell me what makes a double yolker? Our local farmer gurantee's these DY's and I wondered how he could do this? Is it possibe that our hens could produce these??
HENthusiastic
Hi. One of my hens, Anita is a really good layer. Occasionally she has a day off (this has happened about 4 times so far) after a day off, she always lays a really big looking egg and it always has a double yolk! Its very exciting! I don't know how a farmer can guarantee these. I've heard other people say that they are more common in younger hens.
MaxBaz
Edwina has been laying EVERY day for over five weeks and has come up with three double yolkers in that time! They have all been over 70 grams and dwarf the other eggs!
TAJ
I had a 90g double yoker today - basically the shell only goes on in the last 24hrs before laying - if two eggs go through the 'system' at the same time and have one shell it is a double yoker. With mine any egg in the 50s & 60s has always been a single, all those in the 70s-90s have always been double-yokers. Both my hybrids lay them - one its is now occaisionally the other was about 3 a week, now down to 1-2 a week. Apparently it is more likely when they are young - I guess a farmer could breed from those prone to double-yokers to genetically increase the chance in the flock? Christian
He must have a way of scanning the eggs to see if they are double yolkers or not. Supermarkets do the same, as they sell double yolkers too.
cluckbok
We had our first double yolker last week sooo eggciting! I thought that the older hens laid them, but my girl is only young over 24 wks.
dogs and chickens
My parent used to keep 300 chickens and sell the eggs, they had an egg grader machine which basically told them what size the eggs were small, medium, large, ex large, it also had an ungraderable section (too large to be weighted or too small to be weighted) and somehow it could also tell if they were double yolker's and they had there own section no matter what size they were! Not sure how this works but I'm guessing the center of gravity is different in a double yolker to a single yolker so rolls differently down the shoot? I could be totally wrong but I'm guessing your farmer has a similar machine. I had an 81g double yolker today - really pleased as the girls have not been laying well - and it was yummy
TAJ
Ours seem to be taking it in turns - double yoker from Bella yesterday, 'normal' egg today, then Nutmeg laid a double yoker today. Tracy

Cyber Chook
I think there is a machine that shines a very bright light through the egg, and shows whether or not it's a doubler. Caroline
Jules.
Our very first home-laid egg was a double yolker!

chucknette
In the four years I have kept chickens I have only ever had one double yolker. It was massive and from my oldest hen who is coming up for 4yrs old. It did have a band around the middle as if two eggs had been taped together. Cyber Chook
Likewise, Jules, in fact, not wishing to out-do you, but so far out of the first four eggs, three have been double yolkers!! Is this unusual, or the norm while the gals get the hang of this magical egg making business, do you think? Caroline
