*mummy_hen*
Hi All, When i went on my hen party last weekend, Tracy suggested the Domestic Fowl Trust in Evesham as a great place for supplies, etc. Well decided that tomorrow, i am going to tear myself away from them for an hour and go check it out.....quite excited at the prospect of buying my girls yet MORE things. Anyway, just wondered if anyone else had been?
moochoo
Hi there, I go to the Domestic Fowl Trust quite regularly for essential supplies In fact I went on Thursday, they have a nice shop and a little tea room. Obviously I look at the chooks for sale and I have been around their collection too. It's certainly a nice way to spend a few hours and to spend quite a few pounds too. They had some beautiful pekins on Thursday for sale but fortunately they're too small to be with my girls. Hope you enjoy it. If you go through Bidford there's a lovely bank holiday market/ car boot on if you're into that sort of thing and close to the glider centre to keep any boys amused and distracted from over excitable chicken purchases! ..lay a little egg for me
We got our hens, hen house and all things chicken-related from there. They have just about everything you could want hen-wise!!! Your money will just fly out of your purse!!! It's quite tricky to find though...do you have sat nav?? *mummy_hen*
Hi Caroline, No we don't, was hoping to just use and AA routeplanner thing but the directions are usually pants anyway. Any tips you could give us to ensure we get there within 3 hours?!
Helly Welly
I seem to remember that we just used AA route planner and got there no trouble. Took a long time though
moomin
I've been there, the only thing that put me off was that the chooks for sale were crammed into tiny cages, I prefer to see them running around. Great shop though, and cafe, the lemon cake was to die for!
..lay a little egg for me
I think my problem with finding the place was that I was relying on my son, aged 9, to read the Google route to me and trying to remember where it was from the previous time we went and used OH's sat nav to get there. Probably if I could have read the instructions myself it would have been easier!! Agree about small cages moomin. However, when we went quite late in the day most of the chooks had been sold and the cages were mostly empty, so, hopefully, they don't have to been in the selling cages for long. I should have thought to ask them but I was so busy picking the lady's brains for all chicken-keeping info I felt I couldn't then accuse her of not keeping the chooks in perfect conditions. I'm afraid I 'assumed' they were only there on a temporary basis, probably should not have assumed that looking back on it! However, the shop is marvellously well stocked. Just wish there was somewhere closer to me that sells organic pellets/corn etc.
moomin
I'm sure that the cages were there just to put the chooks in for that day, to sell. Since I went there in January this year, I have seen really good reports about them on this forum, and you have to trust our fellow omleteers!! The only problem with the small cages is that is makes you want to take more chooks home, to give the ones that are left more room!!! *mummy_hen*
Hi all, Thanks for your replies. We went this morning whilst it was tipping it down with rain. Bought loads of little bits and bobs for them (or me), like scoops, extra feeders, some of that purple spary (can't remember the name, oops) that everyone suggested yesterday and some other bits and bobs. Do know what you mean about the small cages they are in, but agree they may not be permanent cages for them as we were looking at some ducks and they said they had some chicks and other ducks in a seperate thing outside. Didn't do the farm park as it was a terrible day.....but my mum did go home with 3 white cambell ducks to add to her 3 runner ducks
Clash City Rocker
I bought a Light Sussex from the Domestic Fowl Trust in Feb 2008 and she has been "Ace". She settled in almost instantly and I've not had any problems since. Seeing that you are in Stroud, have you been to Daylesford Organics, near Moreton in the Marsh, really great way to spend an afternoon (though not on a day like today !!!!), Farm, Farm Shop, indoor/outdoor Restaurant Bar, Clothes shop and Gardens. Well worth a visit. PS thay also sell their chickens to the General Public !!!
Helen&Lee
However, the shop is marvellously well stocked. Just wish there was somewhere closer to me that sells organic pellets/corn etc. Don't know if its useful information - but Countrywide at Bromyard have Organinc layers pellets in the back Also, the farm shop as you turn into Tenbury Wells (by the petrol station) normally has them. Looking forward to the tea room Take some wellies though if you are going to look at their hen pens, we went in January and we were wading through mud as they just have the chickens in pens on grass. New2this
Hi Munchkin, be rest assured you won't come back empty handed. I went along for the first time last weekend. Convinced myself, I'm not to come back with any chickens, i'm not to come back with any chickens, I'm not to come back with any chickens, even asked my four year old to make sure he stops me (or daddy won't be happy ). Two and half hours later (including a look around the farm, a stop for lunch with the cuttest Buff Bamtans keeping us company and Josh having a good play in the playground), I still came back with an Incubator and 7 eggs ! Definitely take some wellies ... it was muddy even when it was baking hot last weekend. Have fun Christine.
Valkyrie
Visited there about 2 years ago now, and we were not impressed at all. When you first go there it looks good with lots of coups for sale. The shop with all the chicken equipment, also fairly good. When we went out the back to look at the chickens, it was awful. One pen had 2 dead birds - one wasn't even a chicken, and looked like the bodies had been there a few days - decaying lumps of feathers. We decided that we would never get our birds from there it was so disgusting. Then in the hybrid pens a guy went round and chased the birds to get hold of one - one leg and then he grabbed the other leg - too much stress for the bird. Again the pokey pens of the ones in the shop waiting to be sold looked too much like battery cages - maybe slightly bigger. Probably same size as pens used for showing. Perhaps they have cleaned up their act. Also the name makes it sound like a charity - it is not.
dolly_mixtures
I did the poultry keeping course at Domestic Fowl Trust and it was excellent. The lady who did it (the owner) certainly knows her chickens. We have bought various bits and pieces from them and hope to get a couple of bantams to go with our two in September. Countrywide Tewkesbury also sells organic layers pellets.

chickencam
We bought our Light Sussex and White Star from Domestic Fowel Trust last August. I have to say I was not impressed with the welfare of the birds, both in the sale cages and out in the pens. It was a hot day when we went and there were loads of hens in the sale cages all panting and complaining. Outdoors there were several pens with no water including a duck pen. We asked advice as to introducing new birds to our two original Pepperpots and we were told anything of a similar size would be fine. I have since realised on a common sense level introducing two white birds to two brown ones was always going to cause a certain ammount of trouble because they were so noticeably different. The fact that White Stars are very flighty seems to be common knowledge but we were not warned that they may be difficult to introduce. She is still very much bottom chook. She also had a very short top beak where she had been beak clipped. We asked for advice on introduction and were not told about anti-peck rings even though they sell them and had to go back 24 hours later which is a 50 mile round trip for us to get some When we chose our Light Sussex who was in a small wooden box with one other pure breed they caught her very roughly by one leg and dragged her out. If we need to add to our number again I will be going elsewhere.
The Dogmother
I first visited the DFT a couple of years ago and was aghast at the number of obviously sick bird, the amount of filth and uncleaned pens, and the sheer number of birds who had escaped from their pens and were roaming around. I understand that it has since been cleaned up and is much better, but I haven't been back.
