Nicola O
Just reading the paper at lunch and saw this.........dont know how to find it on line and do a link so I'll type it out....... "Shell out, Save lots. Families struggling with rising fuel bills and food prices are buying live chickens to save cash, claim farmers. Experts say one chicken can lay 300 eggs a year yet costs as litttle as £9 a year to feed and house. The average large free range egg in a supermarket is 25p. After the initial cost of shelling out on a coop and four birds, a famil'y annual saving can be more than £250. Johannes Paul, whose firm Omlet, of Wardington, Oxon, sells chicken coops with birds ready to lay, said "We're three times busier than last year." Jules.
i thought that the article was a bit short £9 a year? I'd like to know what the feed is!
rachel19
Hmm with a bag of food costing approx £5-6 and the fact it goes off within 3 months i dont see how that works out even without all the extras like sweetcorn, mealworms, porridge, wormer, mealworms, citricidal, mealworms and not to mention all of the additional things that slip into your basket for them when you go to actually buy said food
hilda-and-evadne
I wonder how they arrived at that figure. It is £9 PER HEN. Perhaps this is what it costs in Australia (apparently wheat is Australia's largest crop). Bit of a mystery.
Charlottechicken
Just done a quick calculation and mine cost £8 a year each to feed on pellets. 2 hens eat a kilo of pellets costing 44p in 10 days so, 365/10 = 36.5 x 44p = £16.06 or £8.03 per hen Of course, if you add on all the extras, plus the cost of re-seeding the lawn and replacing plants they eat I imagine it comes in a lot higher than that
