Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall needs our money

Recommended Posts

OK, I'm really sorry if (a) this is on wrong part of forum or (b) a repeat of another thread, but if it's the latter it doesn't hurt to publicise. I've had a quick search and can't find exact mention of it elsewhere, but I don't have time enough to search thoroughly.

The background to why Hugh needs our money (urgently) is here

:idea:http://www.chickenout.tv/tesco-checkout-challenge.html

Obviously the auction is going to require quite a lot of cash, but you can just give some money to the cause and the place to donate is here

:idea:http://www.ciwf.org.uk/join/tesco-challenge/

I've just given what I can , because I can't afford to join in the auction! :)

regards, LG

PS - don't forget to tick the gift aid box, they get noticeably more money if we do.

I know what you mean, Sue, but given the huge costs of national advertising campaigns, I think his actions are probably more well aimed. The fact that he is HAVING to raise this ridiculous sum is in itself good advertising for his campaign as it will get press coverage - Tesco have played into his hands, in one sense, by not waiving the fee and they now look foolish. IMHO.

I donated. I tried last night and had a problem with their security for my bank card.Today I got an email to say that they had solved the issue so I managed to donate. Lets hope he reaches the target. It's a shame they don't have a little display like the used to have on Blue Peter to show when they're nearing the target

I've also emailed round my friends and family, and posted a message on our local Freecycle chat group, where one kind person has replied saying they've donated - just a reminder to not only donate but to spread the word! :D

(I also wish there was an update so you know how near the target they are....)

Well I'm sorry but isn't there anyone who thinks that lining greedy shareholders or Tesco's pockets is worsening the problem . .ie it gives them full control. I would vote with my purse & feet, in fact i've emailed hugh & said sorry but why not arrange a support hugh strike..so to speak. Look at the chaos drunk revellers caused on the tube, all arranged quietly via FACEBOOK, MYSPACE, MYEGO, MYPLACE, my my my :) tee hee BEBO etc etc. Surely the most significant message to give to the likes of Tesco who obviously think they're above & beyond all life, natures, health safety concerns, future well being etc

There would be no Tesco if people didnt buy from them, there would be no shareholdres to appease. Why succumb to financial blackmail . .why not send a genuine heartfelt request to all in sundry, asking them to send to all in sundry & quietly arrange a date . .when for a whole week or fortnight .. a wee taster of how it could be unless they succumb to what is right.

So if it were my crusade, or if i were Hugh i would really consider another route, do a massive support Hugh campaign, silently behind closed doors so to speak . .emails!! & have these strikes ongoing until they break, & without costing him or anyone else a penny . .. A simple "Ooops, word censored!"ODY DOES THEIR SHOPPING AT TESCO . . . not even a 'pop in' emergency . TESCO would be reminded who supports their massive profits, who gives the shares value . .. competitiveness being as it is, all the other shops will want to kick their butt so will support as much as they can & change their shops purchasing/requirements to suit needs. Supply & demand, are we forgetting our power as paying customers!!!!

Just walk the talk . .take business else where they will very soon see just how much this means to the general public.

Hmmmm i know it sounds simple but why not!! Massive campaign, purses follow Hugh's campaign & abstain from Tesco & Tesco get massive wake up call.

I agree with your sentiment but, drunken revellers on the Tube did not bring about long term change. The issue here is of accountability - and Tesco is accountable, not to its customers but to it's shareholders. If Hugh can push through a resolution on this, then Tesco will have to explain to its shareholders why it hasn't followed it. That is the way to go about long term change, sad but true.

If you were to arrange a Tesco boycott, *most* sympathetic customers might go off in a huff for a few weeks. but over time and when they have forgotten about the campaign, will slowly drift back when they realise that, much as they like the idea of shopping at Waitrose and buying local hand reared organic chicken, they can't afford to do it as often (also see: me and my Abel and Cole organic veggie and meat box :D )

People in general don't vote with their feet any more. They vote with their pockets.

Hi Emma

Yes i agree, its just a shame long term people who support Tesco's by buying their produce don't have a say in the long term interests. That the details can be affected by people/purse power. ASDA is competive with prices, SAINSBURYS not quite so cheap as ASDA but MORRISONS, SOMMERFIELDS, QUICKSAVE, CO'OP there are plenty of alternative choices if people were passionate enough about the cause.

But a temporary solution i dont think will help the future, maybe its the laws which ned to be changed so the likes of Tesco are breaking the law by not ensuring their produce is purchased from legal humane holdings. Look at whats happened to buying from China, once the workhouses were made public etc

Anyway, one of many worthy campaigns, back to common sense & decency . . in the 'world gone mad' century :)

I think the problem with a boycott is simply that it just wouldn't get the basic support required. The amount of people that go through the door of Tesco, even if 100,000 people (which would be a very large number in support) stopped shopping there it would hardly register as a blip nationwide.

Add in the fact that some people (including me) don't have a Tesco nearby and don't shop there as a rule, and so while in wholehearted support of such action (and I would be) don't actually register at all.

The money for this resolution isn't going to line the pockets of Tesco since, technically, it is covering printing costs etc. and legally they cannot ask for money on top of actual costs. And as has been pointed out the company is more responsible to its shareholders than anything else. This action, therefore, has the chance to getting into the minds of those shareholders (and maybe even some people on the board) which plants the seed for long term improvement.

My tuppenceworth anyway.

what would be extra good is for no one to buy tesco chicken ever again then they'd realise how serious it was... but getting back to the real world I have donated... I'd love to bid but it's all out of my league unfortunately .. but us Omleteers If I may be so proud as to include myself in with the rest of you guys will do our utmost to rock Tesco's foundations...or just cause a slight tremor....they really are a difficult group to deal with, they have no compassion whatso ever and they know they are too big to hit!!! ggos luck guys..keep up the fight
