Hi,

 

Has anyone gotten any chickens from Golden Valleyin Surrey? Or any of the other Meadowsweet Poultrydistributors? I just wondered what they charge for their POL hens?

 

It seems that most farms and distributors charge £20-50 quid per bird that I can find. I have contacted (okay, pestered!) Golden Valley to answer several questions over the last few days and just forgot to ask their prices... if anyone here knows, that would save me another phone call

£20-50 sounds quite steep to me .

Most suppliers seem to sell the meadowsweet hybrids for £10 - £14. £20 - £50 is more likely to be purebreeds. Blue egg layers are sometimes a bit more at around £20. Hope this helps

My hybrids were £12 each, apart from the skylines which were £15. My purebreeds were £25 each. Maybe prices have gone up now that they are more in demand.

Yes, that was the price range I was expecting, everyone, thanks for reassuring me.

 

But, yes, I think demand and certain breeds and egg-layers are costing lots more! I was given info on a great breeder, much closer to me than Golden Valley, and the birds on his website look stunning... but... his blue egg laying cream legbar is £40, most of the others are £35-45, his hybrids are £20-28.

 

My OH's eyes nearly rolled out at those prices, says we won't be saving that much in petrol by going to a closer breeder, so if Meadowsweet's are cheaper then we leave a larger carbon footprint and get the cheaper birds

My two girlies were from a Meadowsweet agent, and they cost me £12 each for two Bovans Goldlines.

 

When I got them, she also had Skylines, which she was charging £20 for, but given that my last flock of girlies were foxed, I felt that was a tad steep, just in case the new ones met a similar fate.

 

£20-£50 seems ridiculously steep, especially for bog standard layers, and it sounds like some breeders are hoping to cash in on the upsurge in chicken keepers....

We got our girls from the Devonshire Traditional Breed Centre, they (including the Cream Legbars) all cost £16.20 each, apart from the Silver Grey Dorking and she was £19.20.

 

I know you are miles and miles away, but I just thought you might find it interesting to see how the prices vary across the country.

If you want any more help or queries, just call us.

You can mix our girls with no problem, all placid, be feeding from your hand in a couple of weeks. Only problem what names to give them before you buy!!

You could take up to 6 given your housing, better start with 4 to see how you get on.

Very cheap! I'm a bit more careful these days about where mine come from. I got three birds from Poultrymad in Lincolnshire just over a year ago, and two of them upped and died last month. One came with twisted toes, and we always knew she was a bit more fragile, but I was really upset when Queenie went. No idea what killed her, just a slow decline which couldn't be stopped by antibiotics or supplements. Ditto the two girls we got from Goodlife poultry (no longer trading I believe), who both died within a year, having always been sickly. Our pekins from one breeder were all undersized compared to our new pekins, and you guessed it, died far earlier than you would expect.

 

Now our newest birds came from the Domestic fowl trust, I picked them out from the spacious and leafy runs, and I know they've been vaccinated properly, so we're hoping for a bit more success with this batch. Our original hybrids are still going strong, even though they're both into their third laying season (Bobkan poultry).

I have to admit, I was really unsure who to get my girls from, but I asked everyone I could locally and everyone recommended the farm I went to.

 

Theres an awfull lot of chicken keepers in this village!

For pure breeds The Garden Hen in Windsor is good (but not cheap).

 

I got my Amber Star hybrid from a Meadowsweet Agent in High Wycombe (the Millers). She was £9 last year.

I live in Surrey. I am sure I saw Golden Valley at the Haslemere Charter Fair. They were selling eggs, and had a few chickens for sale. I am sure they were £12 per bird, but they preferred to sell them in batches of four. I thought they had a website... try googling them.

Hi,

Picked up 3 gorgeous girls from Golden Valley yesterday. £16 each. They have settled into their new home and have been eating well. The lady there was very friendly and helpful. They presented us with 3 lovely eggs this morning, each laid in the nesting box although they'd literally only spent one night in the eglu. My hubby was over the moon when his 3 new girls each gave him an egg for Father's Day! Even Sushi our cat is completely taken by them - but not for the right reasons I might add. Although we are completely new to chicken keeping and have no other experience to compare, we are both very pleased with the girls and with the help and advice given to us at Golden Valley.

Would you be able to tell me what kinds of chickens they have right now? They said they usually have the 6 hybrids they show on their site, plus some others -- it'd be nice to know... I'm hoping to get a speckeldy and a bluebelle in particular, so hoping you saw a few of them about yesterday!

They have got a few Bluebells but I think they might by a bit more than £16 but don't hold me to that as I was looking at the other hybrids. They deffinately don't have any Speckeldies though because I was after one of those too. They have got plenty of Ambers, Blacks and Goldens - we had one of each of those. They have got some Whites although the lady said they can be prone to going broody. I don''t think they have much else at the moment except for one very very huge cockeral whose just become Dad to two of the cutest little chicks .

I'm still new to keeping chucks, but I think three of mine are meadow sweet rangers.

 

I paid £10.00 each for my birds (I have three meadowsweet and three black rock).

They were from somewhere near York on the breeder list from Omlet.

I didn't think that was to dear.

I couldn't get them from omlet because I live to far away. But sourcing chickens was very hard, most had sold out or it was to far to travel.

 

Keeping chickens is still new up here (Humberside). I was wondering if any knew where to get blue orpingtons in this area.Or will I have to travel?

Thanks Christian, hope you and yours are keeping well. It's been a fab 24 hours, had lots of visitors today too. I was up and dressed at 6 this morning letting them out of the eglu - that's got to be an all time first on a Sunday morning I must say. I managed to have a cuddle with Lisa this evening. I'm not sure I'd have had the confidence to do it so quickly if I hadn't have held Winifred at your Hen Party. It's great now that I've finally got my own chickens to chat about instead of reading about everyone else's.

We bought our chickens from Golden Valley Poultry about 6 weeks ago and they were £16 each - they started laying about 2 hours after we got them home which was brilliant and have been regular ever since - we'd definitely recommend going to Golden Valley where they had plenty of different colours etc to choose from and they're organically raised!

We got our new chickens from Golden Valley Poultry two weeks ago - have you been there yet? It is a really beautiful place with what looks like very well cared for, happy, fluffy and healthy chickens free ranging in a big, lush meadow, together with a barn full of nice perches and straw bales for them to sit and gossip on.

 

We got an amber and a blue belle - both gorgeous birds with great temperaments, but if you are introducing to existing older hens i WOULD NOT follow their advice of just chucking them in together, as we were swayed by this advice from our original plan of a gradual introduction and the youngest is still paying the price for that, she was badly bullied

 

This piece of advice above is the only criticism I would have of Golden Valley Poultry - I thought it was a great place and the people were REALLY friendly, rather than the monosyllabic grunting poultry dealers you sometimes hear about!
