Mummy! Daddy! They've done one!

Recommended Posts

In the middle of a really big Lasagne bake this afternoon (enough to serve 85 for party in July!) When a small pink fairy dashes in yelling "Mummy, Daddy, They've done one! Followed very slowly by big brother carrying the precious cargo. We have our first egg. We don't know for sure who laid it but my son asked all three of them and Petunia apparently said "bok". She is the one with the biggest comb though so it may well be. Maybe as we get to know the colours of the eggs we might be able to work it out.

We've had them 2 weeks and 4 days so that's pretty good going really. We're all delighted.

I can't believe how good these chucks are for my son in particular. He talks to them all the time and today picked them up for the first time by himself and put them back in their run when he came back in from playing out. He's very wary of animals and has held them before when we've passed them to him but this is a big step for him. We only let them free range when we're in the garden as we have seen foxes round here and wouldn't like to risk our little girls.

My scales aren't that accurate we only have 25g divisions but I think it's around the 75g mark maybe a little bit over, so quite big for a first one.

sadly haven't been able to eat it yet - pink fairy has "the runs" and we're not allowed to have it without her! Hopefully after 24 hours of starvation she'll be ready for it tomorrow morning. The suspense is killing me!!!!!!

No more eggs today though.

Oh dear, poor pink fairy I hope she gets better soon.

I'm not surprised you don't have any eggs today. After laying a whopper like that I should imagine Petunia will need some recuperation time.

They've laid another one. My daughter has just found it int he nest box as we were going to poo pick and scrub the roosting bars. It's a little cutie though somewhere between 25g and 50g. I can see this hobby is going to cost me a new set of scales as well :?

squeals of delight - we've just found another one so the teeny one doesn't need to be shared as they'll have one each tomorrow! (wonder when me and hubby will get the chance to eat one though...) Jut wondering how I can sneak in a new set of scales without hubby telling me off for spending more hen related money. he's already worked out it'll take about 2 years of eggs before we've covered the cost of the eglu.

2 more today - I have succumbed to new kitchen scales - they'll take up less space in my cupboard and it means that I can be a mean mother and get the kids to weigh them each day and then they can draw a pictogram and bar chart after a week. That's the maths teacher in me coming out!!

Anyway we have quite a big one at 63g and a tiddler at 38g today and I've discovered "Who Dunnit" When we arrived back after pre-school we went to look and found Mrs Pepperpot and Petunia huddled together on the nest. We left them for a bit and covertly watched from inside the house (saving a fortune on electricity as she'd have had the telly on normally!) As soon as Petunia came out of the eglu, we went and had a look and found the small egg. After a bit Mrs P came out and there was the big egg.

No luck from Pecky yet but she's not as red as the other 2 round her eyes. :(

It's just soooooooo exciting :D

I couldn't agree more!

I weigh mine and write them down in a diary, noting anything note-worthy or odd, or their reaction to a new treat.

The children seem quite taken with the chooks. All children should have some contact with animals, it's good for them to care for something that is reliant on them. Like the pictogram and bar chart idea :D

3 eggs today. 2 laid over lunch time somewhere between 11:30 and 1pm and then another there today at 5pm.

53g, 42g and 38g so not too bad so far really. Does the excitement ever wear off? I had to prise one out of my little girl's hands as she wanted to keep it because it was so lovely and warm.
