Peachy77
Got the girls last thursday. Just want to check a few things. We didnt want to change too much at once for them as regards to supplements etc. So just wanted to check what they were all for if someone can help - which im sure you all can. Garlic Powder - to help with smelly poo, and Brokashi Bran - ? Limestone Flour - is this to help with their shells, do they have this all the time? Oyster Shell grit - i presume this is to help with the shells to, and you wouldnt use both at the same time. I have seen they sell mixed grit, that has oyster shells in. Vermx - i have got already to do once a month cider vinegar/apple cider vinegar/poultry drink/poultry tonic/poultry spice - do these all do the same things? One of our three has runny orange poo. Not sure if its becuse she is still settling in, or needs worming etc. Put some apple cider vinegar in their water last night as it says thats if for parasites etc. I think its the gingernot ranger as her feathers are a little dirty. What do i clean her with? Just some warm soapy water or something. Sorry for all the questions. Thanks.
Olly
Garlic Powder - to help with smelly poo - correct! Brokashi Bran - ? Makes their poos firmer if they're a bit runny, and helps with the smell as well Limestone Flour - is this to help with their shells, do they have this all the time? Gives them firm shells, but also the calcium helps them to lay as they need this to make their muscles contract. I feed it all the time - just a scoop full in a Grub full of pellets Oyster Shell grit - i presume this is to help with the shells to, and you wouldnt use both at the same time. I have seen they sell mixed grit, that has oyster shells in. Oyster shell is soluble and gives calcium. They need mixed grit to help them digest food. I give mine grit as well as limestone flour, but they should pick up grit when they are free-ranging, and there is some in the pellets as well I believe. Vermx - i have got already to do once a month cider vinegar/apple cider vinegar/poultry drink/poultry tonic/poultry spice - do these all do the same things? I don't use any of these except poultry spice, which I used in the winter when they'd moulted. I believe they all act as a bit of a tonic, someone else may have more to say on these! One of our three has runny orange poo. Not sure if its becuse she is still settling in, or needs worming etc. What do i clean her with? Just some warm soapy water or something. Just warm water is safest - you could use some soap if she's very mucky but make sure to rinse her well Sorry for all the questions. Don't apologise - questions are what this forum is all about! Thanks. Welcome - ask away, I've learned everything I know about chickens (and a lot of other subjects) on here. You may find the runny poos are because she's just settling in, I'd wait and see if they settle before worming.
chucknette
Hi Hope this helps. Bokashi bran can be put in their food as a gut flora, also helps with loose droppings and smell. Oyster shell you can put in a bowl and they will take it when they need it, Vermex quite rightly to use one a month. Apple cider vinigar is for parasites and also good for digestion. Poultry drink/spice/tonic is a good all round pickme up. The orange poo might be because she is new and is settling into her home. Some one more experience maybe along shortly to help you with this. If she has access to a dust bath she will clear her feathers herself but if they are too bad you can wash them in warm soapy water. When one of mine has feathers matted I wash and the trim them. Best wishes
