Guest
Just read an interesting point from Louise about eating shellfish. I like to think I'm ethical about what I eat and yet I hadn't really given much thought to the issue of seafood. I love crab, prawns, mussels etc and yet all these things are cooked alive aren't they? They have a nervous system so it's quite likely that they suffer a considerable amount of pain when cooked, because they are still alive when this is done. We wouldn't consider throwing a live chicken into a pot of boiling water would we! I've decided not to eat them in the future as there is no cruelty free alternative, I wish there was, I'm really going to miss my moules! Are there any other conscientious objectors out there where shellfish are concerned or, like me, have you never really thought about it? What does everyone else think about this issue? Louise
My point about shellfish isn't so much the cooking although as Poet says it is probably not a nice way to go It is the food safety issues which are associated with them and the cruelty aspects of that I have issues with This will be an interesting thread
Guest
I'm not sure what you mean Louise when you say it's not so much the cooking (which I thought was the cruel bit).... could you explain what you mean for numptys like me?

Egluntyne
I imagine it must be unpleasant to be boiled alive. The thought of what wafts through the shelfish before it lands on our plate is a bit grim too.
Rhapsody
Thats why I never eat crab or lobster. When I was little I lived in a pub that did quite fancy cooking (for those days!) and our speciality was Lobster Dinner. The sound of the lobsters banging their claws on the side of the pot as the heat was turned up will haunt me forever.....
Guest
erm, I've just had a PM from Louise that would definitely put you off eating them. It reminds me of the way the race horse industry use ponies to experiment on before they use the treatment on the more expensive animals. Another non related animal is made to suffer in the process. Hope I haven't said too much Louise? If so, ask for my post to be deleted and thanks for the info!

Seagazer
When we were in Spain last year we passed a small restaurant that had a fridge cabinet with shellfish in it in the window. There was a live lobster in it and my YS was really upset seeing it just sitting there. He wanted us to go in and buy the lobster and then take it to the sea and release it. I'm not sure what the owners would have said if we had of gone in

Ziggy
I imagine it must be unpleasant to be boiled alive. I know it is not the expected reaction for this post, but I couldn't help laughing when I read this... ... You have a nice way of putting things, Egluntine, I have thought that before when reading your posts, can't quite explain what it is, but you say things in a special way... I am a vegetarian, so don't have the shellfish issue, but must admit I wouldn't like to eat anything cooked in that way... Once one starts thinking of what one eats, I find it keeps going and spreading into many areas... right now I have started reading up about milk, cause we are vegetarian but not vegan, and I am starting to wonder a lot about the welfare of animals involved in the milk production... OH isnt keen on my taking my ethics questioning in that direction, but once I do wonder, I can't ignore my questions and consume things without trying to find answers... Lesley
once I do wonder, I can't ignore my questions and consume things without trying to find answers... That was why I started eating meat after 25 years. I wasn't prepared to move towards becoming Vegan but eating dairy seemd hypocritical.....I changed to dairy alternatives but then decided I would eat meat if we'd raised it ourselves. I don't eat seafood - I've spoken to Louise about it before

missuscluck
I havent really stopped to ponder on it. I have never eaten seafood nor ever will I. I dont like the smell or taste of it, or the idea of it being boiled alive so Im off it without having to go into it any further to be put off. Leave it in the sea where it belongs. chelsea
I have never eaten seafood nor ever will I. Leave it in the sea where it belongs. I agree with the above (never eaten it either). We have enough animals to suffice our food needs without stripping the ocean. *note to fish/seafood eaters - please dont think im judging you or frowning upon people who do. just my opinion *
Goosey Lucy
I've eaten prawns twice. The first time I was ill for 3 days. The second time I mistakenly had them in a spring roll, I ordered a vegetarian one but didn't realise until I was halfway through that it wasn't what I'd ordered. I was ill for several days after that. I now avoid all shellfish
