Hi! We just ordered a green eglu. What do you folks use for material in the nesting area? I have seen pictures with straw and pine shavings? Is one better then another???

I personally don't use straw as it can harbour mites and look dry on top, when it is wet underneath.

 

Many use aubiose which is horse bedding - not sure if the same stuff is available in the States, but something similar must be. You could use shredded paper? Anything really, as long as you clean it out often enough.

We've recently started using shredded paper. It helps get the paper ready for composting, costs nothing, and best of all you occasionally get little messages stuck on your eggs!

I use shredded paper for the nestbox, but you have make sure that you've cut it short enough as otherwise it gets tangled around their legs.

Indeed! I recently shredded some ancient papers with less pleasant memories, and it was great to end the process with them getting pooed on! Quite cathartic!

 

We use a cross shredder: then none of the pieces are long and tangly.

I use Easibed as I can't get Aubiose and Hemcore near to where I live. Would highly recommend horse bedding of some time. Poos disappear like magic. = clean eggs!

I use shredded paper- tear A4 sheets into 4 before you shred them to make the pieces smaller.

I get newspapers and just rip them into lengths of about one inch wide and sprinkle easibed on top. They seem to like this as they rearrange it to how they like it and they never poop in it. Which is a bonus for me

 

As previously said you get little printed messages on your eggs.

 

I favor the property pages for their nest so some eggs come out with some fabulous prices on them
