CALNICK
Hi All Have just let our chickens out and have found that our cuckoo maran was dead, no markings on her whatsoever. We only had her and 5 other chickens on Saturday afternoon, we both felt that the c/m was too young to have been sold as it was so small compared to the other chickens as we were told by the breeder that all our chickens were 8 - 10 weeks old. Yesterday we noticec that the C/m seemed to eat very little and was always sleeping, when we put her in the hen house her little feet were freezing. Whatever age it is always sad to lose a little lady, could we or should we have done something yesterday?? The breeder where we purchased he from says that it was the stress of the journey, however none of our other ladies were affecting, when i said to the breeder on the phone that we thought the c/m was alot younger, he told us to **** *** and put the phone down on us. We at no time rubbished the breeder, he told us if you have any problems then phone us, so obviously this was pie in the sky. I would not want this to happen to anyone else, so if you purchase a chicken from any breeder please make sure that you do not get a bird smaller than any of the others. Sad but have the other ladies Calnick
chucknette
Hi CalNick So sorry to hear of you girls demise. I am also annoyed that the breeder was so rude to you. Just keep and eye on the other girls to see how they are fairing for the next couple of days and hopefully they will be ok. Maybe she was too young as you say, bless her. Best wishes
cammy73
Sorry that you lost your chicken so quickly! There was no need to be rude to you though!! I'm glad that all the others are well.... Sharon x
CALNICK
Thank You for your reply's, the other ladies are ok and we are going to collect 2 more ladies later today. Though we are angry of the breeders attitude, we have accepted it now and having some advice from another breeder has made us feel better as he says that the c/m was too young for us to have and from the pictures taken of the dead bird it looks like the other ladies had crushed her in try to keep her warm. Thanks CalNick
Egluntyne
That is such a shame. I am so sorry that you have had such an unpleasant start to your hen keeping experience. Poor little thing. Is this breeder listed on the Omlet Wiki? If so, it might be worth emailing barbara@omlet.co.uk to outline your experience. Just as good breeders get a recommendation, bad ones might be removed from the list.
Ain't Nobody Here
Sorry to hear you've had such a sad start to chicken keeping . That breeder sounds downright nasty . Hopefully things will be plain sailing from now on .
chelsea
so sorry for the shock of your loss, If it were me I would write a letter of complaint to the breeder (if he's not willing to listen to your comments over the phone) and tell him that you know a lot of people in the "chicken world" and that you wouldnt recommend him to anyone (just an idea). That is really awful treating you in that way. Seems to me they are quite happy to take our money but not so good with the aftercare/customer service. StephanieSB
The breeder where we purchased he from says that it was the stress of the journey, however none of our other ladies were affecting, when i said to the breeder on the phone that we thought the c/m was alot younger, he told us to f off and put the phone down on us. Calnick, that is so distressful for you. I am truly sorry. But, am I the only one who thinks Calnick should name the breeder here on this thread? I think you should. As just a straight-forward business issue, you treat people like that, you get named and shamed. No reason for anyone to do business with him unawares. He should learn his lesson. Just as a comparison, I had a confusion this very same weekend over a bird I bought (she is not the expensive pure breed I paid for, but another breed entirely), and the breeder couldn't be more helpful. I'd recommend him to anyone. He is working hard to make-good on the error and is so sorry for any problems. He was named and praised -- yours should get the opposite treatment. Sorry if I sound vindictive or anything, but that is the way I feel.
Karen Pimlott
we still have birds on heat at that age and indoors in the brooder even though its june its cold at night, sounds like she was simply too cold..very irresponsable of the breeder to let birds go as young.we let ours go @15 wks ish before that its not fair on the new owner or the bird. WitchHazel
So sorry to hear about your loss, what a sad start to your chicken keeping! It sounds like there was nothing you could have done. The breeder had no right to swear at you, I would certainly go back to a breeder who did that to me. I'm interested to know who he was - but if you don't want to name him on here, then at least let Barbara at Omlet know so they can review their list of breeders,
JamesH
I don't think theres much you could have done, it likely was just the stress of it all but theres no reason for the breeder to be like that. If they had any sense they would have just replaced it for you.
Valkyrie
So sorry to hear your sad news - I agree with Stephanie - name and shame the bad breeders. He is not thinking of his customers or his birds, just his pocket - which would be severely damaged if he doesn't change that bad attitude. He should offer to replace the poor little thing. Mrs Frugal
I am so sorry to hear what's happened, Calnick. What an awful start for you. I agree with Egluntine's suggestion of emailing barbara@omlet.co.uk so that she can check this breeder isn't on her list. Naming and shaming on here might not be the best thing to do as it might cause problems for Omlet but letting Barbara know will just mean that no one else buying hens for Eglus/Cubes has to deal with this rude man.
