Advise on coccidiosis symptons please

Recommended Posts

I have an awful feeling that Carmen my Created who is approx 17 weeks might have the above?

She's not interested in food much and is lathagic (sp) does 'huddle in a corner' has yellow diahorrea yellow all the time that is runny but no blood in it.

Has anyone had any experience with the above how did they deal with it, I know that I need to buy some cider vingaer or similar poultry tonic but I've been reading about some vaccines but know local vet is a poultry sort, wonder whether I can put it in the drinking water and do it myself but what do you use? I've tried googling it and I'm getting scared at the gorey pictures (Carmen has not white smearing round vent - yet)

Apparently one of the symptons is 'sudden death' I do hope not :(

Any adivce would be very very welcomed!

Thanks

I'd take her to the vet if you think she has coccidosis.

Vaccines are not generally available to the backyard poultry keeper, as they are supplied only in industrial quantities.....you vet will be able to advise you.

If she is having diarrhoea all the time, she may become dehydrated, so try to get fluids into her with a syringe if she is reluctant to drink.

You're brill Egunltine! :D

There are two super glugs to my 5 girls but I've just put a deep dish full of fresh rain water in there and anyone would have thought I'd put in a bowl FULL of grapes!!!

I think your diagnostic (sp) might be right.

I'll watch her closely this weekend. I could do with come of the Bokshia(sp) bran shame my local equestrain place doesn't sell it, I know I can order from Omlet but wont come straight away!

Coccidiosis/coccidia can, but not necessarily cause death. It is important to get any hen to a vet ASAP if it is not responding to treatment at home.

If a hen has diarrhoea, then (as Egluntine has recommended) it needs plenty of fluids; I usually follow this routine:

1. Feed only pellets or mash with Bokashi bran, no treats or veg at all

2. Make sure that the hen has plenty of water, if possible add Avipro and ACV to the water

3. Feed on a mash of live yoghurt and Bokashi Bran

If the hen hasn't improved within 24 hours, then please take it to a competent poultry vet... it's important to know when home treatment isn't working and when to call in the cavalry.

Coccidiosis usually results in dark green poo, but then so does feeding them on lots of cabbage/greens
