if everyone does a door conversion

Recommended Posts

I guess there are lots of people who don't bother (or who don't read this forum!) I don't disagree, but I'm sort of resigned to it. Seems a small price to pay to be able to refill the feeders etc. without practically breaking my arm to get it through the door. I also didn't fancy winter, and trying to do all this on wet grass in my work clothes!

Prudence said it would be ok to buy the arch. I think she must have dozed off, because somehow a set of plastic roosting bars slipped into the order too! Mind you, the wooden ones are barely holding together. I think I'm more annoyed about those, than having to order an extra arch.

I think Omlet should do the extra arch and larger door as standard. I wouldn't mind if it put an extra £20 or so on to the cost of the Cube: it would make such a huge difference.

I loathe going through that tiny hole. I have recently discovered, however, it is easier to do it on your side than on your front.

I don't have the skills to alter it myself, so I will have to put up with it. But if Omlet want someone to test any modifications they come up with, I will be a happy volunteer.

I have just added the extra run frame to my order and Chloe at Omlet knew exactly what I wanted it for, so there must be a quiet a few people doing the conversion

Gallina, It took me a while to get my head around the instructions posted (especially seeing as I don't have my cube yet) but now I think I understand them, I recon it is going to be easy to do the conversion:

If you already have a cube I assume you just do this:

1/ Remove top half of end section

2/ Slip in extra run frame and attach to the end of run with tiewraps (set back a bit)

3/ Replace top half of end section, just using clips along the bottom edge.

4/ Add clip or velcro to the top and sides to secure the flap in place when not in use.

Then again, I may have read them wrong - only time will tell - I will keep you posted :oops:

Hi Gallina

The flap door version is my creation and I promise you it is very easy to do! The instructions may sound complicated but in reality its very simple..

I have a word doc style set of instructions with photos I am happy to email which you can print off and have with you in the garden if helpful?? I know many others have already followed them sucessfully :D

I am happy to send you a few extra clips as have a couple spare if it would help?

Gallina - I hope you take Egg Lou up on the offer - you don't know what you are missing till you have the conversion - it really has changed our lives! I know that sounds a bit over the top but it is true. As we have not got a safe area of garden just yet (to out-fox the foxes) we cannot let ours freerange - they are in Cube plus 3 extensions and lots to play with in there so seem fine, but we wanted to be able to interact with them more and the kids wanted to be able to help out more. The door conversion has allowed us to go into the run and spend time with the chickens - we can close it over with velcro strap when inside (oh so tempting to leave kids there at times, or to hide out there myself!).

By the way, I recall you are the person with the 2 cubes and lovely planting around them - I will be looking at your photos with interest when planning my safe garden area (as it is just concrete and me fighting off brambles so far!).

I too have ordered the stuff for a door conversion.... together with another extension to give them more space as I'm not sure how much they will be out and about....

silly to ask, but I just wanted to check that it doesn't alter the fox proofness does it? As long as it's all snapped together tightly with velcro or zip ties??

Haven't decided which to do you the half or the full..... any suggestions?

Also also off to get a very long rubber ended rake!

I have half done it, the frame is coming tommorow nbut i took the clips of and replaced with velcro already as i couldn't face the munchkin door again, I must admit that undoing all the velcro clips is a bit tedious, I have 10 on, how many do thers have, am I going over the top, it needs them till the extra frame is in to hiold it all in place but i guess once the frame is in I won't need so many.

No, Omlet don't sell a door conversion kit. (They appear to think that the present door is quite adequate for an adult.)

You have to buy an extra arch (sensible people are now ordering them with their cubes) and follow the design recommended by a couple of Omleteers.

You then have a small door for the hens for everyday use, and a big flap to let yourself in occasionally.

I don't think they expect adults to use the door! I think it's intended to be for chickens only, and then when you want to clean the run, they assume you are going to wheel it to one side.

You try doing that with a Cube run and extension. I can only do it if I have a friend to help me (I live alone). Hmm "hey, do you fancy coming over for the afternoon and helping me clean the chicken run out?"

Strangely enough, I do have one friend who responds enthusiastically to this request!

Quickcluck, as long as you have several Velcro ties on, it's safe in my opinion - if you do the 'top only' conversion, in particular, then they are out of reach of foxes/predators. Like electricbarbarella, I couldn't wait for the arch, which is on order, so I've done it anyway but it does make the roof sag. I am looking for snap clips as the velcro ties are a pain.
