Fox ate my quail

Recommended Posts

A fox ate through my fencing and ate my quail on Friday night/ Saturday morning.

We are so upset about it. The quail were funny little birds but they had become quite tame.

I have beefed up security and ordered a foxwatch but I'd really like to ring it's neck. Poor little quail.

Oh Janty im so so sorry :(

I do hope you get the security sorted out as Mr Fox is sure to be back :(

I know. The girls will hate me tomorrow as they will have to stay inside their runs when we are at school.

Hopefully the foxwatch won't be too long and we are going to measure up the garden accurately for the permanent run once we have finished school. The plan is to attach wire to the inside of the run and bury this about two feet down in the ground. Then we will have railway sleepers all around the outside of the run. In addition to this, the girls will have their cube runs attached and I will lock them in each night. We were going to sell the cube runs to raise funds for the permenent run but we don't want to put the girls at risk. The run will hold the two cubes and their runs so that will be fine. At least I will be able to use all the Omlet feeders and drinkers.

Add a foxwatch to this and we feel that we should be ok.

Mr Fox got 2 of my OH's quail last w/e he was gutted, so know what you're feeling. I'm really still shocked & puzzled at how they were got though. There is absolutely no way fox could have got in the run. The run had taken a good battering though - I wonder if the 2 escaped. We know it was a fox because of the paw prints & the big black poo left on top of the hutch. grrrr

Anyway luckily OH had put 7 eggs in the incubator which when I last looked (last night) were all rocking about so fingers crossed in the next few days we'll have offspring of Mr Extraordinary!

Sorry to hear that you lost your quail Janty :( - we lost our first ones to rats :x

As it seems you are going to be putting a lot of effort, time and money into your new run I wondered if you're in a position to consider using electric wire? We have a permanent run which is 5' 6" chicken wire with a skirt at the bottom. Holders screw into the wooden posts about 8" from the ground and a single strand electric wire runs through these. An Energiser and battery is attached to the wire. We have two batteries and keep one charging all the time, they don't need changing too often and you can hear if it is still working. As long as the grass is kept very short around the outside of the run then it doesn't short out.

We use Eglus without runs attached - all inside this perimeter fencing. We have foxes around every night and have had no problems so far (2 years)

WE have visiting children who have been fine with the fact that the wire is electrified and it is easy to turn the energiser off for a while if we are all out looking at the hens. I can sort out photos if it would help.

Pity it doesn't keep rats out
