beach chick
Mr. Fox came to call last night - girls were all locked up in their eglus and so are perfectly fine thank goodness. BUT... and here's where we were a bit stupid: we didnt keep the leccy fence on at night, because we knew the girls were safe, and thought we'd save the battery. however, Mr. Fox bit about 4 enormous holes through the fence, practically chewed it to pieces in fact. OH has managed to fix it and we are back in business - but from now on, it stays on 24/7! this is despite a big bouncy dog who goes haring out at any time of the day, plus late at night and early in the morning - particularly late at night, and in fact I think I should have taken more notice of his night time hysterics... The Bantam of the Opera
i might be getting some of this when i move, do your hens ever go near it, if they did would it hurt them. same goes for the dog? thanks
beach chick
hi bantam - dog has put his nose through it twice, and it completely freaked him out, poor baby. on the plus side, he no longer goes anywhere near them... chooks seem to get a milder zap, I think its happened 2 or 3 times, but they just squawk and get back to scratching the grass with no harm done. so for us it is working a treat! esp. now it is on 24/7. beach chick
well, he's one determined beast, but it seems the fence is doing the trick! went out with the dog at 8.45 this morning, about to go for a walk - dog SHOT off like a mad thing, and I saw him chasing Mr. Fox round the field, very nearly got him too (dont think he'd have known what to do with the fox if he had tho.) girls all fine, didnt even raise an eyebrow, but Mr. Fox has completely destroyed a rugby ball that belonged to the dog... Gamebird
So glad your girls are safe Beach Chick - a lesson learnt. It is essential the fence is kept on 24/7 even if the chickens are safe in their inner coup. Mr Fox will keep trying just in case he gets lucky . My fencing is always on and I know they come around every day - they leave their smelly calling cards. My dog doesn't bother with the chickens so has not been zapped but my friend's dog was interested until she touched the fencing - now she won't even look at the chickens. It does work but it has to be left on all the time.
