Martin B
What do your family think about the Ian Dowie scandal?
Cate in NZ
They're not impressed, to put it mildly , but felt that it was time for Curbs to go as he'd done brilliantly getting Charlton to comfortable mid-table finishes in the Premiership, but they've not improved on that for seasons now, and always run out of steam after Christmas. So, in favour of a change, not at all keen on Ian Dowie and all the associated rumpus, but are witholding too many opinions until the season kicks off. Some good results and I suspect all will be forgiven.... but not by Crystal Palace I don't think. More losses, and he might not last too long. We'll see
Martin B
He's a poor manager and I think Charlton have a good chance of playing Palace in the championship soon!
Hellcat
but football is a truly accessible sport. Son's £30 a year to register with club & league, after that £2 a match. Bargain, compared to his tennis lessons that worked out in the region of £20 an hour We had to drop those, just ridiculous .Thinking in terms of children & exercise that's all to the good surely So, no I'll not be watching personally because it's just not my thing, but "Come on England" But do we have to have it rammed down our throats all the time? The season seemt just to have finished, now its the world cup and then it'll be pre-season matches etc etc etc ad nauseum. I grant its great exercise, not disputing that at all but so much on TV? Is it really necessary? Think of folks like my dad, not got sky or digital, on his own, wants a couple of hours entertainment of an evening, loathes football, bu**er me, thats all thats on 3 channels, BB on 4 (my god!) subtitled film on the one remaining channel. Poor old boy.
One Man Banned
Thank god I am Welsh - I don't think we've ever been in the World Cup, not that I am bothered about it. I hate the football, I agree that it takes over the whole TV schedule, I don't watch a lot of tv and get really peeved when something I want to watch is shoved as far late as 23:20 And another thing. Why when a game goes into extra time and they finally finish do we still have to have the 30 mins of summary For gods sake these fans have the score and if they want to watch a *****y replay RECORD IT! ooh best go and calm down, got quite worked up then. had to edit you there, Andrew! Don't worry, there'll still be the forum, we can avoid the football. Sheila
Martin B
Football is the pride of the nation, not England but the clubs in my case. I think football is to be watched by more people than those viewers interested in Holby City. Football is also delayed sometimes, the highlights get shoved back often due to other silly niggly programmes.

One Man Banned
nowhere near as glamourous as Haverfordwest buff I come from the valleys about 20 minutes from Newport In the part of Wales that's not far enough in for the Welsh to want us and not for enough out for the English to want us either! Black RockStar
Having two boys aged 14 and 12 football is a must in our house. They both play, and I still play occasionally for an over 35's team at work. We have had season tickets at Ipswich for years and they have both been mascots for Ipswich at Gillingham and West Ham . However, i am not into parading "Chav Flags" on my car or property or shouting "En-Ger-Land". Cricket is also very popular in our house and all us boys play and watch (the mighty Essex Eagles). We particularly like the 20/20 floodlit games. My wife, although not a footy spectator, claims to be a "Yid". (Tottenham fan).
Black RockStar
I really do hate football - even when the boys get all enthused about it, I can feel my eyes glazing over....... Chookiehen, If you don't like football why do you sport a picture of David Seaman? Just wondering. Reminds me of an old joke doing the rounds after the last World Cup. Whats the difference between Cinderella and David Seaman? At least Cinderella got to the ball!

Black RockStar
I like your Crouch thing. Cheers, I just changed it today. I had the airplane with birdflu and flapping wings but as birdflu seems to be out of the news I thought I'd have something more appropriate for the occasion. Football is also delayed sometimes, the highlights get shoved back often due to other silly niggly programmes. If football is the pride of the nation, God help the nation. Holby City is one of the higher rated soaps, so careful what you say... I actually was going through our friends and family (thats boys AND girls, Martin!) and about 25% are even remotely interested in football. I think the so-called 'obsession' about football is a fallacy perpetuated by the tabloids at the behest of the government. 'The countrys going down the toilet but, hey, if we push football at the nation, they'll get worked up about that instead'. Problem solved. 'The countrys going down the toilet but, hey, if we push football at the nation, they'll get worked up about that instead'. Problem solved. Hey Helen! Stop stealing my thunder - it's my job to get upset and rant about New Labour, to brand Tony Blair the devil incarnate and to worry about the state of the nation (no manufacturing in the Midlands anymore - HP sauce in Birmingham, Royal Doulton in Staffs, Chubb locks and Goodyear tyres in Wolverhampton, ALSTOM trains in Brum, Peugeot cars in Cov, Rover cars etc are all casulaties of this area in the last few years - but don't worry we have loads of MBA graduates and we will have a "knowledge" economy... ) I am not at all excited about the World Cup yet but I dutifully bought two copies of the Sun a couple of weeks ago to get the "knockout" wallcharts where you fill in all of the scores. We have one in our Conservatory at home and I put the other up at work today; the gaffer was going nuts about us being a professional, customer facing commercial deprtament - but it still went up! Like I said, I am not at all enthused yet but by Saturday night I will be in a frenzy!!! and if the World Cup is a conspiracy to stop me worrying about things then I welcome it!!! PS and when it's over can we bring back caning in schools please?! Dan, the reason these factories closed down goes further back to the conservatives, than to blame the present government all the time, unfortunatley your beloved Thatcher had a lot to do with getting the ball rolling on that score, look what she did to Liverpool, a thriving port city she crushed it down almost to non existence and with it any hope of a thriving economy on merseyside, and as for buying the "scum" newspaper, i wouldnt hang that rag in my loo, let alone my conservatory (if i had one). spacedhopper
Blimey Dan, didnt expect a response until tonight, what you doing home in the day ? Yep agree with you there, and i honestly am not saying Blair is brill, or anything like that, cant stand him to be honest, and that goes for most MPs, there are very few politicians who dont just look after themselves I like tony Benn but for his personal beliefs and i always listen to his opinions, all the others, no time for. As for the "Scum" would never buy or even read somebody elses after its Hillsborough comments, didnt really read it before then, but since no chance. Anyway back to work young man. Richard T
Dan, you forgot to include in your utopia the Welsh team qualifying for the World Cup. And in case anyone is interested, Wales have only qualified for one World Cup Finals - 1958 in Sweden. They drew their three group games (1-1 against Hungary and Mexico and 0-0 against Sweden). This meant they and Hungary finished joint second in the group and had to play each other again for a place in the quarter-finals. Wales won the play-off 2-1 and faced Brazil in the quarter-final. Hungary had been very dirty in the play-off and I think Wales's best player, John Charles, was injured and couldn't play against Brazil. Brazil won that game 1-0 with Pele scoring his first World Cup goal. For further information you can try tracking down the book entitled "When Pele Broke Our Hearts: Wales and the 1958 World Cup" by Mario Risoli. This has been Richard T, your Welsh football correspondent, formerly of the glamorous Welsh Riviera resort of Porthcawl. PS Why is Cinderella no good at football? Because her coach is a pumpkin.
