Joojoo
Am so upset. Just went out into the garden to cut the lawn before the rain came. Went under the lavender, which was overhanging the lawn, with the mower and a frog jumped out. I picked it up to move it out of the way and noticed what looked like a graze across the top of it's nose. It was still jumping about so I shouted Ashley to take it to the little brook down the lane, to safety away from the cats. He's just come back to say that it was bleeding a lot and it wasn't a graze. The lawn mower had taken off the whole of the top of it's nose down to it's jaw . He's left it in the grass at the side of the brook and doesn't think it will live long. I just don't know what to do. Am sat here crying as I type. It was a complete accident but I feel dreadful knowing what I've done. He's just gone back to see if he can see it, but no sign of it anywhere. I can't see that it will survive but don't know any way that I could have euthanased it to put it out of it's misery if we had been able to find it. Guest
oh Jules, you're exactly like me! A pigeon hit my windscreen once, it just flew right into it and I had no time to avoid it and I had to pull over because I was crying. I could see it rolling around in the road in my rear view mirror, stunned but not dead but it was a busy dual carriageway and there was no way I could have rescued it. Ian was using a strimmer in the garden once and he hit a toad with it and the toad (well some of it) went spinning through the air as it must have caught the end of the strimmer. He and I were both upset about that. You didn't do it intentionally and I know how you feel about being unable to euthanise it. I rescued a blackbird from a cat once and I knew it was too badly injured to live but neither of us could bring ourselves to do it! We made it comfortable in a box and put it in the shed so it could die in peace. Please don't feel bad, wish I could give you a hug you mad chicken woman you!!!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
lisa33
Please don't blame yourself. It was an accident. Easier said than done I know. I would be exactly the same as you. Big hugs to you.
Joojoo
Thanks both. I know it was an accident but it just feels so horrible knowing that I am responsible for it's injuries
Looney
Poor you Please don't feel bad, you didn't do it intentionally I did exactly the same thing a couple of years ago and it still turns my stomach to think about it. Sending you big hugs x
BeckyBoo
awful isn't it, I'm no good at putting things out of their misery either. Once (and you're not to laugh as it's awful really) when I was patrolling the good streets of Virginia Water we came across a rabbit that had been hit by a car and been left. Because I'm such a soft touch for animals I made my colleague pull over (this was at about 5am but it was summer so was daylight) to see if we could save the bunny. Unfortunately it's back legs were gone as it's back must have been broken and my colleague was about to get back in the car! So I yelled, "you can't just leave it there, it's in agony" or words to that effect. He looked at me (as you can imagine a big burly policeman might and said "what exactly am I supposed to do with it?" So I told him he would have to put it out of its misery. So he did. In those days we only had wooden truncheons. Now cut to the two people in their car, making their early morning trip to who knows where, as they come round the corner on a quiet summers morning to see a big burly policeman in the middle of the road beating a rabbit over the head with a truncheon! I'm sorry! Mrs Bertie
Guest
I know xxxxxxxxxxxx it's natural to be upset because you're a good person and that's why I'm proud to call you a friend!

Rona
(and you're not to laugh as it's awful really) I'm sorry Mrs B but I can't help laughing as that conjures up such a hilarious picture
Egluntyne
You did the right thing MrsB ....the story does conjure up an amusing mental image though. Don't blame yourself Joojoo. It was an accident. Upsetting but unavoidable.
clootie
Aw, poor Jue. Don't feel too bad, you never know, he may well have survived and, at this very moment, is surrounded by lovely lady frogs lavishing attention on him because he looks so different from all the others. See, every cloud ...............
Karen & co.
You poor thing Putting the frog back in the brook was a good idea though, it was an accident, and they do happen sometimes, horrible but they do Karen x
Ain't Nobody Here
Totally understandable why you're upset, but you can't blame yourself. It was just one of those things that's unavoidable. Have a hug .
MedusA
How awful for you, Jue. As everyone has said, it was an accident and you can't help that, but I know how you feel. I saw some frogs once that had obviously been deliberately tortured by some evil person(s). The image remains with me to this day. You didn't do it on purpose and that is the important thing here. *hugs*
Joojoo
Thanks everyone. Still can't get the image out of my head of Ashley's description and didn't sleep very well. Was first thing on my mind this morning too, but nothing I can do about it. Hopefully he didn't suffer for very long. It's put me off going out in the garden at the moment. It probably sounds over dramatic, but everytime I go out there my eyes are drawn to the lavender and it comes straight back into my head
Egg Lou
You mustn't blame yourself.. it was a pure accident , there was no way of knowing he was there.. I have done the same thing once years ago although my one went right in the mower blades so over in seconds.. very upsetting though. I expect he went off to hide somewhere and passed away quietly. Try not to think about it and go have a glass of wine
Joojoo
Thanks EggLou. I can't get my head around how I never killed him outright. It seems bizarre. I've got a rotary mower and he must have been sat at just the right height to take his nose off but not touch the rest of him. His eyes and head were fine Hopefully as you say he passed away quietly and quickly somewhere
