Wangsbird
Last Wednesday I had my first case of a broody girl. I have three girls in total- 2 are rescues and one is a youngster. The youngster who has only been laying for about 1 month got broody. She was like it for 2 days but then snapped out of it But since that first broody day not a single girl has laid an egg. Prior to last week we were getting between 2 and 3 eggs a day They look fine and healthy. Happily clucking around the garden as usual. They are all still eating and drinking well- but not a single egg! They are in the extended run from the crack of dawn to the moment I get home from work, and then they have the run of the garden until sunset, so they are getting plenty of light Can anyone help? Thanks
Donna_0
Hi Wangsbird I think a lot of people are suffering with chooks on egg strike at the minute..mine are I've looked all over the forum, and It seems if the are eating/drinking and acting fine then its okay. I'm going to worm them at the end of the month and have been using diatom powder for mites etc just to be on the safe side. I spoke to my hubbys friend who has lots of and he said it is probably down to the change in weather conditions, as they can react to the change in length of days / cold. Hope this has made you feel a bit better..I hope mine lay some soon as I want to do some baking and really don't want to buy any -Barbara 28/07/08-Currently on strike! -Margot 04/08/08-Currently on strike! Wangsbird
Thanks Donna I was just concerned that it was something to do with one being broody. I too need some eggs as am completely out and refuse to buy any! The other half gave some away to his mother- I am not amused! hahaha
Purplemaniacs
I have one who keeps trying to be broody and takes over the nest box in the eglu but it doesn't stop the others if they want to lay they seem to squeeze in too. Very cosy Chrissie
Egluntyne
Are they laying somewhere other than in the nest box? Have a hunt round. You might find some under a shrub.
Wangsbird
Nope- definately not anything. I did have a look around the first few days but all I could find was poo.. I am hoping that the sun that is supposed to be coming at the end of the week will cheer them up a bit more
Mrs Nesbitt
Mine are a bit hit and miss at the moment too. I presumed it was down to the weather... or lack thereof I'm hoping they lay some in the next week as I've taken the enormous step of entering two egg classes at our county show If they don't get a move on I won't have any to enter Mrs N x
Wangsbird
Today there is a substantial amount of feathers in the run. Could they be going through the moult? The internet seems to suggest this happens Oct/Nov time? If it is how long do they not lay for? I am hungry!!! hahahaha
Donna_0
Yey one of my girlies laid an egg yesterday and one today..must be the sunshine!! Now..just Margot to lay Has anyone elses cheered up now and been laying?? -Barbara -Margot
frenchlayer
Mine have the odd few days off too. For me it seems to correspond to not enough grit, (after checking the sand boxes) and too many treats. So if one stops laying for a few days, I normally increase their proper food and it sorts itself out.
CockADoodleDoo
so are mine it is probably because they are moulting all of mine are at the moment ceep giving then extra vitaminse ( life guard tonic, poultry spice) to help them get back in shape and hopefully in a few weeks they will be back to normal Sam
