BeckyBoo
Yes, with a cursory nod towards Prudence we've bought another 7 eggs today to put under our Speckledy who is, once again, broody This time most of the chicks will be going to a friend of ours who's girls are all nearing 6 years old and so hardly ever lay. They're having Bill and maybe Fred as well, the cockerels from our first hatch and I've already got an interest in a cockerel from this hatch if there is one (which there's bound to be.) Anyway, went to Perfect Poultry in Ligh"Ooops, word censored!"er and he has some new hens! So, got two Indian Games, REALLY sadly the Polands he's got aren't laying yet - once they start laying and we have a broody hen I'm going to get me some more of them as I LOVE ours, anyway, also got two Rhode Island Reds, a Barnevelder, a Silver Laced Wyandotte and a Wheatan Maran as the one we had last time didn't hatch. So. She's on the eggs now having tried to cut me to ribbons as I dragged her bodily from the cube and into the rabbit hutch very kindly donated by Egg Lou. So countdown starts today!! GreenGirl
Hi Mrs Bertie Interesting reading your post, you are only a few miles from us We went to in ligh"Ooops, word censored!"er but didn't end up getting any from there, loved the Indian Games too, my husband really wants one! What are the Pplands like? Loved the look of them, but wasn't sure how tame they would be. We collect our 6 on Sunday (once we have built the newly delivered cube and the 3m run this evening!) I was wondering how many you had in your cube? Do they have enough room? thanks!
Egluntyne
Any luck in persuading the chap to flog you the yellow Eglu?
BeckyBoo
Hello Green girl! You must pop round! We've got 10 big girls sleeping in the cube at the minute, we had 15 last year but we have got a walk in run so they're not in the cube run - started with 7 but they are SO addictive. We've got a yellow Eglu (borrowed) for the chicks so we're not too bad for room. As for Polands - they are FANTASTIC!! Dave (who is actually a girl) can't see you coming so you can just scoop her up and carry her round like a handbag! She is quite noisy, sqawks like "Ooops, word censored!"odies business and lays pure white eggs every other day or so. I was gutted when I found out his aren't laying yet otherwise I'd have come home with a dozen Poland eggs. Feel free to pop in as I said, can't promise cakes but nearly always got something in for visitors (from a bottle in the fridge!!) GreenGirl
Thanks, I will let you know when we pick ours up and compare notes! So it sounds like the constraint is the run much more than the cube. What do you think is healthy for the 3m run? They will be in there during the day til we get home as we both work full time unfortunately (for now ) I would love to get OH a game as a surprise but wonder if 7 is too many for the run then? BeckyBoo
I don't think so, we had 7 in the cube with one extension and they were fine. Don't forget you can put perches across as well to make the most of the height of the run. If you had 7 Buff Orpingtons or Brahmas then you'd have a problem, but 7 standard hens should be fine. I'd make sure there's more than one drinker if I were you during the day as 7 hens drink a LOT of water, and as and when you can let them out then so much the better, but realistically a cube with extension with is more room than the government allows for Free Range status (I think ) Where are you going to get your hens from out of interest, I looked for other local breeders but they're all shut currently. The only other way I thought of sourcing hens was through the ads at Backhursts or Rokers where I get the chook supplies from Anyway, when's your cube coming? GreenGirl
Great idea about the perches, hadnt thought of that. I have some parrot toys and logs to go in, so there will be lots of interest Maybe I need to get another glug then. The cube came today, OH has just got in and we are about to embark on Project Eglu Construction, we may be some time! The girls are coming from a place near Salisbury - http://www.wylyevalleychickens.co.uk/ and we pick up Sunday morning Think I might give perfect poultry a call about the indian game ...
