I was frantic - I had lost a hen

Recommended Posts

Forgot to tuck the girls in last night before it was dark and went out to do it at 9 p.m. and fell over a hen roosting on the back door step - picked her up and carried her to the eglu only to discover the eglu run door had managed to shut itself so shutting her out. I popped her in and then discovered no one else in there either. 2nd hen found in her usual laying spot in the shed and she was also cuddled and put in eglu to roost. 3rd hen was missing - the torches were rubbish and while my hubby went to find another one I went everywhere round the garden with small torch bok bokking everywhere - after 15 minutes I spotted her roosting on a branch which had bent almost all the way to the ground under her weight and boy was I glad to see her. It was quite a scary time that 15 minutes - needless to say they got some nice treats to-day.

Its a horrible feeling isn't it ? When we first had our two girls Ginger 'disappeared ' one night when I was a bit late putting them to bed. We looked everywhere for her, and you feel a right idiot calling out in the pitch black but at the same time feeling sick with worry ! We eventually found her snuggled up right at the back in the narrow space between the conservatory and the fence ! I then had to negotiate my way down to get her out ! At least I'm wise to her now and when she decides to 'disappear ' I know where to look !!

I know the feeling!

I once went to put Babs away and couldn't find her. I was running around the garden looking under all the bushed, in the shed + greenhouse, she would normally run over to you looking for treats.

I went into the side passage to get some corn, and there she was staring out the quail

She must have just wondered in!

Soon after we got our first 4 we "lost" Polly. I could see the others in the garden but no sign of her. Searched round for several minutes, then happened to look towards the french windows and there she was, indoors, watching me through the window!

Dora also has a hiding place which I'm yet to find. She'll disappear completely then reappear a while later, I'm sure she has a stash of eggs there.

Glad you found yours - it must have been really worrying especially in the dark.

I now know that sense of loss and panic.

I "lost" Joy on Saturday and got thoroughly cold and soaked running round the garden in the pouring rain looking for her. In all, it probably took about half an hour to find her (she'd got into the garden at the back of mine), but it seemed to last forever :( .

I was so delighted when I found her safe and well :D, I wasn't actually bothered about the fact I could wring out my trousers, and was much amused by the way she walked up the path with me bok-bok'ing and telling me all about her big adventure.

These funny little feathery beasties really do worm their way into your hearts, don't they :D

People at work laughed at me when I told them about Joy's adventure. Actually it was more the image of me freezing and soaking wet, shaking the corn box for all I was worth and yelling "Joy-henny, where are you? Come on little girl" all the way round the garden that had them rolling in the aisles. Not entirely my usual dignified persona  and all for one little hen.

They assured me it's just as well I am not a parent, or I'd have worried myself into an early grave by now (if I hadn't expired of pneumonia chasing chickens first!)
