Dinkychick
Hi, I thought i bought 3 girls at 8weeks old... but alot of people have always said that 2 look male. Anyways i rang the chicken man and he says they are definatly girls, as cream legbars can be auto-sexed at the time of hatching, and the two male looking ones are a cream legbar and a clb cross. He said there is no way the gigner one is male!! The biggest one 'Pecky GG' made the sound of a laying hen about 2 weeks ago when chased by a cat! They were about 17weeks old then... last week it started making a weird crowing sound in the morning...its not a full crow more like an ar-e arr sound. But to me it looks like a cockerel and is becoming more of a bully each day. The white one 'Alfred' has the same comb and wattles but isnt aggressive, nor does she crow... so ill add some pics and sit quietly in the corner sulking, (would you all be so kind as to give me your thoughts please? )whilst i wait for what i think is coming. Oh ps none of our chucks are laying yet! Alfred:front end male back end female? Pecky GG .... boy?? Pecky again looking just like a cockerel Strut... please tell me shes not a male! abwsco
Not sure if this helps but your cream legbar doesn't look like mine Mo can be very vocal though and last week did sound like a cockerel but since then she's gone back to her normal noises and is still laying eggs thank goodness! chelsea
the top two look male and Strut female to me Pecky looks a definite male, look at those lovely tail feathers. Edited September 21, 2008 by Guest
Madchook
They are beautiful What big tails they have......hmmmm. Look more boyish than my 4 month old cockeral...who doesn't make any boy noises yet but sounds like a harrassed hen when chased too.... hmmm, the dark one has a tiny comb, gotta be a goods sign??? oh and surely if you cross an autosexing breed, they are no longer autosexing!? lisa33
I think Pecky looks very manly but what gorgeous colouring he /she has.
ruth1
They look more like my cotswald legbars and leghorn to be honest, leghorns do have big combs which tend to then flop over to one side. I wouldnt have them down as a cream legbar though as im sure they are quite distinctive looking like abwsco's pic .
Snowy
Think Pecky is most definitely a boy I'm afraid. Alfred also looks very mature for a 17 week old. But neither of them look like cream legbars! Strut is probably a girlie, she has an upright tail - but she may have some leghorn in her and that is a typical leghorn tail! Yes i agree they dont look like cream lebars lol. Pecky is meant to be a pure one!! Alfred a clb cross and the chicken man said he didnt know what strut was. Oh dear.... i do hope i can rehome Pecky, i wont give him back to the breeder as he will cull it for his dinner! All my hard work of growing them big and strong is not going on his dinner plate!! Currently asking everyone i know if they will take him [dont want to call her that lol] on.
superjules
Oh dear! Alfred has some very manly looking legs there, although you might be lucky! Pecky is clearly a boy, judging by those lovely pointy hackle feathers and Strut is a girl.
Egluntyne
I agree....top two male, bottom one probably female. Check the hackle feathers.....if they are pointyat the ends it indicates male and rounded....female.
Dinkychick
Thanks for all your input peeps! I appreciate it Im going to leave the door of the eglu open a little tonight like i was before 'pecky' started being noisey in the morning...see if when they let themselves out if anyone crows good morning! i shall keep you updated! BeckyBoo
Hi there, well I'm afraid that although I'm no expert both Alfred and Pecky look male to me. Pecky is not a legbar, here's a link to a picture of legbars, http://www.poultrymad.co.uk/chickens/legbar.html We've got a legbar girl which we hatched in May, http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=33904 nothing like your Pecky I'm afraid and he doesn't look like a legbar cock either Alfred also looks fairly well developed for 19 weeks, specially for a non-laying hen, very red comb and wattles. Strut I think looks LOVELY, very fluffy girly. I think you need to be having words with the breeder, legbars are EASILY sexed at birth so he should (and probably did) know better. What will you do? It's a shame because Pecky is a very lovely looking handsome lad Mrs B
Dinkychick
Well just to let you all know Pecky was a boy! He started crowing very loudly a few days after my last post, and fighting the other chucks, lucky for him the person who recomended the breeder felt so bad about sending me there that she offered to take him.... she has 30 hens and 7 cockerels! She didnt really want another male but has a major soft spot for animals So he is now running about in fields and sleeping in a stable with some horses and a whole [herd!!!] flock of chucks! My friend says he doesnt stop crowing all day! and is a fiesty little s*d he puts his neck fethers up to her when she goes near him haha. Now all i have to do is wait for Alfred to decide what it is!! no crowing yet! But the neck fethers do look a bit sus. Ahh well.... if s/he is quiet then s/he might be able to stay, if not i have already sorted him/her somewhere to go that doesnt involve pies or curry!!
